Xavier turns into the parking lot of the ice skating hall, parks the car and pulls the handbrake. He puts his hands on his thighs and looks at me with a bright smile.
"I am happy that you agreed to go ice skating with me. I didn't knew you could even skate!"
My heart sinks just a little at his words. I smile back nervously.
"Yeah, of course I'd want to go skating with you. I'm really looking forward to it."
"Alright, let's go." He opens the door and exits the car, walking to the hall slowly.
The truth is, I absolutely can't ice skate. I've never done it before. But when he asked, the words just slipped out -"Sure, I can skate!". Standing there and admitting the truth felt like admitting defeat. So many people can do it, it can't be that hard, right? I'll just learn it on the spot.
I open the door and slide out if the car as well and hurry to catch up to him.
While we were standing in the line, I felt my nervousness grow. I look over to Xavier, scanning his expression. He was zoning out, staring into the distance. His profile is sharp, softened only by the weak sunlight catching in his messy hair.
For a moment, I just take my time to admire him.
Then, as if sensing my gaze, he shivers, his eye regaining focus, turning to me.
He smiles softly. "Are you alright?"
I glance to the side to win some time to answer and took as I step closer as the queue shortened.
"Yeah... I guess." I murmur.
"What was that?"
"Yeah, I'm alright." I force a smile. "I'm happy to be here with you."
His smile deepens. "I'm happy to hear that."
We shuffle forward in line until it's our turn, the cashier was still in the back. When he steps to the counter, his eyes lit up as soon as he sees Xavier.
"Xavier! Good to see you here again!" He glances at me, his grin widening. "Got your partner with you this time?"
I laugh nervously, waving it off. "No, no, we're not together."
"Ah, pity. I wouldn't pass up someone so beautiful." He winks, and I feel the blood rush to my ears.
"I assume you need some ice skates?"
I nod quickly and he leaves to the back. I rub my ears, trying to make them cool a little, and look to Xavier.
"You didn't say you were friends with the staff."
He shrugs and looks me into the eyes. "I said I go pretty often here."
"Yeah, but I didn't expect that often."
The cashier returns, a pair of white skates with silver shoelaces in his hand.
"That would be 5 dollars. Would you like any other equipment with it?"
I shake my head, accepting the skates with shaking hands. The white leather feels firm and cold, the stitches where tracing from the tip of the shoe to the black elevated heel. The skit was shining in the sun and was polished to well I almost cut my hand on it while holding them.
I'm fumbling for my purse when I see Xavier handing over the money.
"Xavier, you don't have to-"
"I insist." he interrupts gently, his smile warm as his hand brushes my arm. "It's my treat."
