Once again, Nathan narrowly dodged the Mother Zombie's deadly swipe, using all his strength to slam into the monstrous creature, forcing it back momentarily.
The Mother Zombie possessed unimaginable speed and power, while Nathan had unmatched skill and agility. But things were taking a turn for the worse. The bite marks on his body began to ache terribly, a sign he was all too familiar with—he was becoming one of them. His mind grew foggier with each passing moment, and he knew his time was running out.
"Can the gene serum not stop me from turning into a zombie?" Nathan thought bitterly, feeling the darkness creep into his consciousness.
"Roar... Heh... Heh..." The Mother Zombie let out a sinister laugh, tearing into Nathan's flesh once again with its claws. It didn't want Nathan to die quickly; it wanted to savor this moment, to toy with him just as it had with the other mercenaries. It relished in the suffering it inflicted, taking pleasure in knowing that its prey had managed to escape earlier—this time, it wouldn't make the same mistake.
"You... bastard!" After nearly ten minutes of relentless combat, Nathan's modified body couldn't hold up against the Mother Zombie's overwhelming might. His weapons were scattered who knows where, and in his left hand, only a lone dagger remained. This simple weapon might just accompany him to the end of this journey...
In a last-ditch effort, Nathan delivered multiple deep slashes to the Mother Zombie, but the toll on his body was immense. With each injury he received, it became increasingly clear: he was losing. Finally, he collapsed, utterly exhausted, while the Mother stood tall over him.
"Heh... Heh..." The Mother Zombie placed its foot on Nathan's chest. His tattered clothes could no longer conceal the bloody, torn flesh underneath. The surrounding zombies watched eagerly, hungry for a bite, but they would not move without their leader's command.
"Am I really... going to die here? Will I return to the real world?" Nathan wondered in agony, his thoughts clouded by the pain and confusion. Would he really meet his end like this?
The furious roars of the Mother Zombie reverberated through the rooftop, its blood-red aura finally fading away, signaling the end of its berserk state. But what difference did that make now?
Its cold claws grazed Nathan's cheek, sliding back and forth as it toyed with him. It seemed to take pleasure in seeing its prey tremble.
"Damn it... I've never felt so weak!" Nathan's blurry eyes filled with anger. His mind, fading in and out of consciousness, refused to give in: "Even if I die... I'll get one last hit in!"
"Roar!" The Mother Zombie screeched in frustration, as if irritated by Nathan's defiance, and lunged at him once more.
"You bastard!" With the last of his strength, Nathan kicked at the Mother's leg, knocking it off balance momentarily. But that small reprieve wouldn't stop the relentless monster. In mere seconds, it was back, ready to end him once and for all.
Nathan didn't resist this time as the Mother Zombie's claws plunged into his abdomen, ripping out chunks of flesh. But his right hand, still gripping the dagger, swung out with precision. In a split second, the blade glinted and shot through the air—piercing the Mother Zombie's forehead.
The sound of hissing filled the rooftop.
Suddenly, an eerie silence overtook the battlefield. The mindless zombies that had been watching with bated breath fell still.
The Mother Zombie, stunned, stood frozen in place. Its blood-stained claw still held pieces of Nathan's flesh, but the dagger was now buried deep in its skull, the blade piercing through to the hilt.
