Hearts glanced over her shoulder, sighing. What a day it had been. She looked down at her wriggling stomach. Yes. Her kittens would be born in about a month. Stars were just appearing, and the city's rustle and bustle was dying down, now. As she was about to head to her den, Hearts heard a sound near the trash cans. Someone rustling through trash, maybe?

"Hello?" She asked curiously.

"Uh. . .Chief Hearts?" Came a familiar quiet voice.

"Not a chief, Spotty. Just Hearts. Mate to the chief."

The young and new Sharp-Eye's head popped out of the trash.

"What are you doing in there? The whole Alley is asleep! You should be, too, you know." Hearts scolded.

"Sorry. I got bored."

"Get back to your den, Spotty." She sighed.

"Right away, Chief."

"Not a chief, Spotty!" She called to the giggling lass, who started running away to the Sharp-Eye Den.

"Why was she awake?" Came an even quieter voice.

"She was bored, Panda. To your nest, now." She said to the small trainee. She nodded and trotted away. That one was a real good listener. She made her way to Ticker's den. Her mate was snoring softly, curled on his side. He had gone to sleep hours ago. He was exhausted, because today a rat had attacked young Panda during her training session with Clank.

"Well goodnight to you, too." Hearts smiled.

SEVERAL MONTHS LATER

Heart's eyes glistened, as she looked into his eyes and seeing the reflection of her own fright in her mates eyes.

"Stay with me, Hearts." Ticker pleaded.

"I'm. . .fine! I'll be. . .fine." She whispered, the agony too much. She felt her world slipping away and knew with every breath she took, it'd be her last. Months and months ago, Clank's (who had died a few days ago of sickness) mate had died giving birth to Panda. Hearts hadn't expected to be the second next death in the Alley. And so soon, too.

"I'm serious, Hearts!"

"I know you are. And I'm not." She cried again, and felt her world going dizzy and dark. Her vision was blurring. And the last things she ever heard was the desperate cries of her mate and the mewling of her newborn kittens.

Gasp!

She awoke, gasping for air. She looked around, her fur bristling. It was bright here, unfamiliar buildings surrounding her.

"W-where am I?" She asked herself. "Welcome, Hearts" A voice thundered. She sprang to her paws, frightened.

"Is that. . ."

"Yes. It is I, Garo." A large animal appeared from behind the tree's.
