"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Skyler asked, blinking rapidly like she was trying to wake up from a dream.
"Absolutely!" Heartily responded, unaware of the dangerous howls the moon was receiving from nighttime strays. Skyler sighed, nodding, and Heartily could see the trust her sister had in her. They stepped out of the Alley, glancing around. It was so quiet, all except for a few humans, walking down the sidewalks, and a couple others in a different alley shouting at each other. One or two cars passed by, but that's how the city is, night or day. It never sleeps. No matter what, there is always someone, whether it's just one or two people, roaming the city. Sometime's they even loiter. People loiter a lot in the city.
As far as she was concerned, Heartily was told nighttime was the best place to actually leave the Alley. It was said that the Alley cats, or any stray cats at all, shouldn't even be seen at daytime. Chief Ticker said that over seven years ago when he was a kitten, just before a year old, there was this rumour that very nearly almost the whole city knew! It was that when night fell, that's when the cats owned the city. It was easier to catch birds since they were all asleep. Unlike the rest of the city, who always said cats were really nocturnal, Lily and Fang stated that cats are really crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk.
Heartily had once asked her father one day what it was like back then, when he was a kitten. "Well, The Alley Cats had much different rules than we have now." He had said. "My father, Chief Denver, had made a rule that the Alley Cats would only make an appearance in the city at night, and so on, for eleven months, it was so, until my mother started arguing with him that 'cats should be allowed to make an appearance whenever they want, not hide at daytime like cowards'. Many cats, including myself, agreed, and father's rule was broken. He continued to accept it, though he was the only one whom stayed loyal to his rule."
Heartily puffed out her chest, leading her sister onto the road.
"We're not even trainee's yet, Heartily! We still have two weeks until we are so." Skyler had confirmed, but that hadn't stopped them into exploring the city. And then, blazing light, a car almost hit them, but they were lucky enough to of had escaped back into the Alley. "
"Never mention this! Never remember this! Act like we were just by mother's side, nursing, sleeping! Act like this never happened!" They blew panicked shouts at each other and vowed never to go back out there until they were trained.
But just the trust that Skyler had in her, the fear in her eyes, her tail wrapped protectively around Heartily's shoulders, as the car swayed sideways, nearly hitting them. The way she was shielding her, like she was actually glad to be Heartily's sister, like she was actually wanting to be there for her. . .
"Skyler!" Heartily cried, sprinting forward and running like the strongest wind that has and will ever happen was carrying her across the world in a single heartbeat. She was out of breath by the time she was at their side, but it didn't matter. She was too focused on this to even notice.
"What happened?" She sniffed, wondering if she was panicking about nothing and Skyler was really just resting, or it looked like she was from afar. Panda first gave both Heartily and Scout quick licks between the ears and on their cheeks, and it was no surprise her eyes were sparkling like the galaxy on the brightest night.
