December 19th, Sunday
The warm sun filtered through the curtains, casting a gentle, golden glow over the room. I stretched out slowly, savouring the peaceful quiet of the morning, my mind blissfully still as I reached across the bed for Cari, hoping for a few more lazy moments of snuggling before we started our day. But instead of finding her warm body beside me, my hand landed on an empty, cool space where she should have been.
I opened my eyes, blinking against the sunlight. The bed was cold—too cold for her to have just gotten up, but instead of panicking, a calm curiosity settled over me. Smiling to myself, I wondered what mischief Fletcher was up to.
Slipping out of bed, I padded out into the living room area of our suite, following the faint sound of quiet shuffling and the smell of fresh coffee. And there she was, standing in the kitchen, her back to me as she adjusted plates and coffee cups on a small breakfast spread. Cari was wearing one of my baggier shirts—one I was positive I hadn't packed. I chuckled to myself; she must have snuck it into her suitcase before we left New York.
As if sensing my presence, Cari turned around, and when her eyes met mine, a bright smile spread across her face. She walked over to me, reaching out to loop her arms around my waist. "Morning, Ave," Cari murmured, leaning in for a gentle, lingering kiss. "How'd you sleep?"
I pulled her close, breathing in her familiar scent, feeling the steady, calm assurance of this moment with her. "Good" I murmured, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Waking up to you in my arms would've made it even better, though."
Cari gave a soft, sheepish laugh. "I'm sorry. I couldn't sleep, so I got up earlier to order us some breakfast."
That's when I noticed it—the small table near the window, set with coffee, orange juice, pastries, and a few covered plates. She'd arranged it just perfectly in the corner, with a view of the city coming to life under the morning sun.
Cari took my hand, guiding me over to the cozy nook she'd created. "Come on, sit down," she said, her voice soft as she nudged me into one of the chairs. She kissed my cheek, a familiar, affectionate gesture, before settling into the chair across from me.
I picked up my coffee and sipped it slowly, enjoying the warmth and the rich aroma as I watched her gaze out the window. Cari looked completely at peace, the sunlight casting a soft glow over her, making her deep brown eyes look almost golden. But I knew that, even with the view of the city skyline, I had the better view—watching Cari, seeing her in my oversized shirt, her hair in a messy bun, and her eyes soft in the morning light.
Cari glanced back at me, catching my gaze, and a faint blush crept across her cheeks. "What?" she asked, her lips curving up.
"Just admiring the view," I replied, my voice soft.
Her blush deepened, and she looked away for a moment before meeting my eyes again. She shifted a little in her chair, and I noticed a flicker of nerves—a rare sight. It was subtle, but I knew her well enough to tell when she was working up the courage to say something.
"How are you feeling?" I asked gently, not needing to clarify that I was referring to everything we'd shared yesterday. The weight of our conversation still lingered, but in a way that felt healing, a quiet understanding between us.
Cari bit her lip, a habit I'd come to recognise as her way of gathering her thoughts. Finally, she reached across the table, her hand finding mine and giving it a gentle squeeze. "I'm okay," she said, her voice steady but soft. "I know how hard it was for you to share that with me. Yesterday meant a lot to me, but I don't need you to keep reliving it for my sake. I don't want you to keep thinking about the hard parts, you know?"
