The dim light of the chandelier flickers softly as KASHVI stands in the hallway, her heart heavy with the day's events. She gently knocks on PRITI’s bedroom door.

KASHVI: Ms. Mary, you go ahead. I’ll check on Priti.

MS. MARY: I went to her room; she’s already asleep.

With a nod, Ms. Mary walks away, leaving KASHVI alone. She walks into PRITI’s room and watches her sister, a peaceful vision of innocence, half-covered by her hair. KASHVI gently brushes it aside.

KASHVI (whispers): My little princess, what have we become? Someone's evil eye has fallen on our family.

She remembers their joyful past, feeling a pang of sorrow. Leaning down, she kisses PRITI's cheek.

KASHVI: I promise you, I’ll work hard. You’ll never face problems in life.

PRITI stirs awake, blinking in confusion.

PRITI: What happened? Is it morning?

KASHVI: No, it’s still night. Come on, let’s have dinner.

PRITI: I’m not hungry. I’m really sleepy.

KASHVI: Kids can’t sleep without dinner! Come on, up you go!

With a playful push, KASHVI helps PRITI out of bed. They head to the dining room, where a lavish spread greets them: fruits, cakes, Italian and Mexican cuisines. MS. MARY stands by the table, beaming.

MS. MARY: Welcome!

PRITI’s eyes widen, her mouth watering.

PRITI: All this… for us?

MS. MARY: Yes, just for you two!

KASHVI: You didn’t have to prepare all this. Dal chawal would’ve been enough.

MS. MARY: I didn’t know what you like, so I made a bit of everything. From tomorrow, tell me your favorites.

They nod, and MS. MARY serves dinner. As KASHVI takes her first bite, memories of her father flood back, and a tear escapes.

MS. MARY: My child, what’s wrong? Is the food not good?

KASHVI: No, aunty, it’s delicious.

MS. MARY: Then why aren’t you eating?

KASHVI nods, tears brimming.

MS. MARY: You have to be strong for Priti. Wipe your tears and eat.

KASHVI takes a deep breath, looking at PRITI. With renewed determination, she wipes her tears and begins to eat. After dinner, they both head to their rooms, seeking solace in sleep, the weight of the night still lingering in their hearts.
