I was wheeled into the operating room on a stretcher. A surgical assistant draped a cloth over my body and slipped a breathing mask filled with general anesthesia over my mouth.
This was the operation that would change my life. After this surgery, I would no longer be the pitiful, pathetic fool that anyone could take advantage of.
I would be a new person. Strong, outrageous, invulnerable... all of those words. Biological parents? I don't need them. Forgive Chase? Never.
Slowly, everything around me became muffled and fading as darkness enveloped me.

"Your awake."
I woke up to a doctor standing over me, her brown hair pulled into a bun atop her head. A white cap was pinned to her hair and she wore a white doctor coat, round glasses framing her dark brown eyes.
"How are you feeling? Oh right, you can't speak." She chuckled at her own joke, reaching for her clipboard by the side of my bed. "Your throat is expected to feel sore and swollen for two to five days, so don't worry if your throat feels hoarse right now. Avoid speaking, clearing your throat or coughing to guarantee a fast recovery. Make sure to drink plenty of water and get adequate rest."
I nodded halfheartedly, struggling to contain the excitement in my heart. I felt like I was dreaming. The surgery was a success. It wouldn't be long until I could talk!
