Epilogue

Every morning, Camila had a precise routine. She would get out of bed, still smelling her man on her skin, take a hot shower to soothe her sore muscles, and get ready for work. She ate the breakfast Shawn had prepared for her, sitting next to him at the kitchen counter, and then they would leave the house together.

Since a new ring had appeared on her finger, Shawn made it a point to walk her to the entrance of the building where she worked, giving her a long kiss and promising to pick her up at the end of the day.

The office assigned to Camila wasn't very large, but it had a beautiful view. If she hadn't been so busy all the time, she would have spent much more time gazing outside. But in a job like hers, there was never much time to waste.

On her desk, two photos kept her company every day. The first was of her in her boyfriend's arms on the night he asked her to marry him. The second was a family photo with her parents. Camila often felt emotional when she recognized the pride and affection in her father's gaze, something that he had always shown her. She would never stop being grateful to him.

It was during a conversation with her father that she realized which path to take. After being fired from Mr. Mellon's firm, she was sure she didn't want to be the opportunistic lawyer anymore. She was tired of always being the bad guy. However, she also knew that nothing suited her better than navigating the many intricacies of criminal law and winning complicated cases. The law was her passion, her talent; she couldn't give it up.

Her father had asked her when her talent had made her feel good, on the side of the righteous. At first, Camila didn't know how to respond. Had she ever been on the right side? No, or at least not entirely. But there was one incident she remembered vividly, one she wasn't entirely proud of, but that ultimately made her feel good.

Years earlier, during her aunt's political campaign, she had been tasked with uncovering the dirt on the Mendes family. What she found had ended her relationship with Shawn for a few years, it's true, but she also knew she had contributed to the imprisonment of a dishonest man.

Former Senator Mendes had been found guilty of corruption and money laundering, and knowing a despicable person was behind bars because of her intervention filled her with pride. "This is what I should be doing."

The job interviews for the ethics committee in New York had been a breeze for her. So, within a couple of years, she found herself having everything she had always wanted. It wasn't about money, power, and glory.

It was the support of her family.

It was the satisfaction of being part of something meaningful, of contributing to a just cause.

It was the unconditional love of the only man she had ever truly loved.

She still had a long way to go, but she knew that with each step, Shawn would be by her side.
