Eight years ago

She was running. She didn't know where she was going, but she had to run away from that place. If she hadn't done it, death would have been her fate. They would killed her. So she ran as fast as possible.

«Who are you?» someone asked her, pointing a sword against her back. Elin could feel the tip of it licking her. She forced herself to turn around slowly and look in front of her. It was a man, a dane. She'd never seen one of them.

He was staring at her with a confused look, waiting for an answer. But Elin didn't answer him, no word came out from her mouth. She hadn't the energy to talk, she only wanted to be safe. She needed help.

«I asked you a question, girl.» the blonde man in front of her spoke again. Now his sword was pointed against her neck, but she continued to say nothing. She couldn't do it. Not in that moment, anyway.

Voices of men attracted the attention of the dane and fear grew in the young girl. «Help me.» those were the only words that came out from her mouth. «Please.» she whispered then, getting closer to the man and grasping his arm.

That was the moment the dane saw something in the girl's eyes, something that pushed him to make the choice that would have changed Elin's life forever. «Come with me.» he said, holding her hand.

Then they ran together. They were running away from those who wanted to kill Elin. They ran, until they found a cave to hide from the men. And they hid there until no one was in sight anymore.

The dane shifted his gaze towards the girl. He looked at her, but she didn't look back at him. All her attention was elsewhere, turned at the warriors. She was afraid of them, but the man didn't know why.

«They're gone. We are safe now, there is no need to worry.» he tried to reassure the girl, but she knew that it was a lie. Elin knew who sent that warriors, she knew how far he would have gone.

«He will never stop until he finds me.» she was right. He was an ambitious snake, and he wouldn't have stopped until he'd have reached his goal. She could have spent her entire life in fear and danger.

«Join me.» the dane told her suddenly. She was a helpless young girl. He had done everything in his power to save her, but he wanted to keep helping her. He knew that there was more to that little girl. «I'm here with my clan. We can protect you.»

A confused look came out on Elin's face. She had just met the warrior, she didn't know whether she could trust him or not. He was a dane. She'd never met one, but from the stories she'd heard she knew Danes weren't merciful with their enemies.

But she was not an enemy and that dane didn't seem to fit the stereotype. Actually, if she didn't join him, her only option would be to keep fleeing from who wanted her dead.

And so she did. That day Elin joined Ragnar's clan. He'd saved her life quickly without a question and she was immensely grateful for that. If she hadn't met him, she would have been dead.

She thought she'd escaped her past that day, but she didn't know it would come back to haunt her when she least expected.
