The thunder rumbled again, as if in sync with her heartbeat, and for a split second, she thought about making a run for it. Her brain screamed for her to bolt, but her body seemed rooted to the spot. Before she could decide whether to flee or fight, the figure stepped forward into a sliver of moonlight that filtered through the window.
It was Kim Tae Hyung.
His tall frame was unmistakable, and though she could barely see his face, his voice cut through the tension. “Calm down, it’s just me.”
Y/N’s eyes widened, her mind spinning with questions. Tae Hyung? What was he doing in her house? How did he even get in? And more importantly, why was he so calm while she had nearly screamed herself hoarse?
She blinked in disbelief, still gripping the door for dear life. “W-What are you doing in my house?!” she finally managed to choke out, the panic still evident in her voice.
Tae Hyung crossed his arms, clearly unfazed by her near-breakdown. His tone was casual, as if it were the most normal thing in the world for him to be standing in her darkened kitchen. “I heard you scream from next door,” he explained, raising an eyebrow at her. “Your front door was unlocked, so I came to check if you were okay.”
Y/N’s mind raced, embarrassment slowly mixing with the fading adrenaline. “You heard me?” she echoed, her voice a little higher pitched than usual. The realization hit her—her scream had probably echoed through the entire neighborhood. Oh god, the whole street probably thinks I’m being murdered.
Tae Hyung let out a small chuckle, which only made her feel more ridiculous. “Yeah,” he said, his smirk visible even in the dim light. “You’ve got quite the set of lungs on you.”
She felt heat rush to her face, though whether it was from lingering fear or pure mortification, she couldn’t tell. “You broke into my house… because I screamed?” She squinted at him, still trying to process the absurdity of the situation.
“I didn’t break in,” Tae Hyung corrected smoothly. “Your door was wide open. I just walked in. Besides, I figured you were being attacked by a burglar or something.” He glanced around the kitchen, clearly amused by the lack of any real threat.
Y/N glared at him, though her pulse had finally started to slow. “Well, sorry to disappoint, but the only thing attacking me is the blackout and my overactive imagination.”
He gave her a half-smile, stepping closer as if to examine her more closely. “You always this jumpy?”
Her eyes narrowed, more out of embarrassment than irritation. “Only when I think there’s a murderer in my kitchen.”
Tae Hyung chuckled again, the sound deep and smooth, completely at odds with the terrifying storm outside. “Noted,” he said, his tone teasing. “I’ll try not to scare you next time.”
Y/N let out a breath, finally allowing herself to relax a bit, though the absurdity of the situation wasn’t lost on her. She stared at him, still baffled by how calm he was. “Why didn’t you just knock?”
Tae Hyung tilted his head slightly, clearly enjoying her flustered state. “Where’s the fun in that?”
Before she could respond, another boom of thunder shook the house, and the lights flickered back on, flooding the room with harsh brightness. She blinked, squinting up at him as the sudden shift made her more aware of just how close he was standing.
