The next day on our way to school, Bella told me she planned to confront Edward about whatever problem he seemed to have with her. I debated doing the same with Jasper, but I didn’t really want to. Luckily, neither of them showed up at school that day, or the next day— or the next day. Every day we saw Rosalie, Emmett and Alice sitting at the same table or walking down the halls, but no Edward, no Jasper. It got to the point where they had each missed so much school I was beginning to get a little worried. What if he had died? Why did I care so much whether or not Jasper died, I didn’t know him at all. It shouldn’t have bothered me and I shouldn’t have cared about it. I went to school, I went to work for weeks, hung out with Cam, Hunter and Sasha, helped look after Adam, but all I could think about was what if Jasper was dead? It drove me bonkers.

“Hey, let’s go we’re gonna be late,” Bella slid on her socks into the kitchen, nearly topping headfirst into the sink, but she caught herself on the counter

Bella was without a doubt the clumsiest person I had ever met. I jumped up, taking my mug of coffee with me. At this point Bella’s truck had at least three empty abandoned coffee cups in it at all times. Turns out I wasn’t really a morning person, and coffee kept me alive, so I usually brought my mug with me to school and finished it in the car. We threw on our jackets and shoes and headed outside. I was wearing a black t-shirt with a raven on the front, with a red plaid and a black zip up hoodie overtop, and regular jeans, plus my hiking boots which were great on the icy sidewalks since Forks seemed to be perpetually in a state of winter.

“Hey Bella—” I was cut off by a yelp as Bella slid on a patch of ice, knocking both of us onto the ground “You are on a roll today.”

“Yeah, sorry,” she groaned

“Whoa,” Charlie came running over, pulling Bella off of me so I could get up “You two alright?”

“Yeah I’m good,” Bella grunted “Ice doesn’t really help the uncoordinated.”

“Yeah, that’s why I had some new tires put on the truck,” Charlie told us “Old ones were getting pretty bald and I don’t want you guys skidding off the highway on the way to Port Angeles.”

“Thanks,” we chorused

“Welp, probably be late for dinner,” Charlie continued “I gotta head down to Mason County, security guard at Grisham Mill got killed by some kind of animal.”

“An animal?”

“You’re not in Phoenix anymore Bells,” Charlie sighed “Anyway, I figured I’d lend a hand.”

“Be careful,” Bella cautioned

“Always am.”

Charlie gave us a nod before getting into his police car and driving off. We both hopped into the truck and made our way to school. As usual we waited outside with our friends before the first bell rang. I let Adam sit on the tailgate and draw pictures on a page in my sketchbook while all talked. Without drawing too much attention to ourselves, Bella and I both watched the parking lot, waiting for the Cullen’s to show up for school. This had become a habit, wondering if Edward and Jasper were going to play hooky for the third week in a row. Unfortunately the bell rang first, so we all made our way inside without any information yet.

The whole day was normal. Bella and my’s friend groups had sort of merged the more we hung out. Mike and Cam still never talked to each other, Hunter and Angela were good friends and Eric liked to swap music recommendations with the grungy girl. After lunch we all made our way to science together, fully prepared for Bella to join mine and Cam’s group once again.

“Prom committee is a chick thing, but I gotta cover it for the paper anyway, and they need a guy to help choose the music, so I need your playlist,” Eric rambled
