The rumor of "He Dacheng going berserk and assaulting someone at midnight" swiftly spread throughout the village. By afternoon, when work finished, the latest news was that Bao Lanxiang had heard about a formidable shaman named Yang from the neighboring village and planned to seek her assistance.
In the afternoon, only a small portion of the field remained unworked. The team leader urged everyone to finish it, resulting in a later than usual end time.
As dusk approached, those who had completed their tasks earlier were already leaving the fields. Jiang Ya still had a short stretch left to tend to, while He Cheng trailed behind, dragging his hoe along the ridge. With a shared understanding, they intentionally fell back from the others.
"I heard you beat up Shao Chunlai last night?"
"What else did they say?"
"They claimed you were possessed by evil spirits."
He Cheng bared his teeth. "Indeed, I encountered a bewitchingly beautiful little ghost last night."
Wasn't she the one he saw? Irritated, Jiang Ya rolled her eyes at him.
Lifting her head, she spotted Jiang Fengshou approaching from the other end of the field. Swinging his hoe aimlessly, he shouted, "Second Sister, hurry up! Let's meet halfway."
With a disapproving click of his tongue, He Cheng thought, This brother in law is overly diligent, isn't he?
"You really didn't know?" Jiang Ya glanced briefly at Jiang Fengshou and whispered, "I've heard your mother has invited a shaman to perform an exorcism for you. What if...''
Jiang Ya couldn't help feeling a bit apprehensive. If there truly was such a "nun," would her and He Cheng's relationship be considered as being "possessed by evil spirits"?
Their understanding of each other was profound; with just half-spoken words, He Cheng comprehended her unspoken thoughts. However, he didn't take it seriously and smiled, "Do you really believe that stuff? These rural witchcraft practitioners aren't to be trusted. Even if they exist, do gods get summoned so easily?"
"Just be careful anyway, or they might come after you."
"Let them try their best. Don't worry, I'll make sure to drag you along before leaving. We stick together till the end."
With renewed speed, Jiang Ya advanced quickly and soon met up with Jiang Fengshou.
Jiang Fengshou eyed He Cheng suspiciously and asked, "Second Sister, were you talking to him?"
"No, you must've seen wrong," Jiang Ya replied.
Jiang Fengshou believed her and shouted towards He Cheng, "Big brother Dacheng, are you still not done working? Its time to go home, even the captain has left."
The siblings hoisted their hoes over their shoulders and began walking. Seeing this, He Cheng swiftly grabbed his hoe and hurried to catch up. The trio joined the tail end of the scattered group, heading homeward amidst the twilight.
When Jiang Ya and Jiang Fengshou arrived home, Song Shixia was already preparing dinner. She scolded Jiang Ya for being too slow and urged her to hurry up and feed the pigs.
After preparing the pig feed and filling it into a bucket, Jiang Ya called Jiang Fengchan to carry it, as usual, while instructing Jiang Fengshou to feed the chickens and shovel their droppings.
With Song Shixia at home, the two little brothers felt emboldened to resist. However, Jiang Ya's fierce demeanor quickly suppressed any defiance.
"Don't want to feed the pigs?" She pointed at Jiang Fengchan. "Fine, then go tend to the chickens and clean up their waste. Oh, and fetch two buckets of water to rinse down the pigpen."
