Xiaoling Village's greenhouses were standard semi sloping warm structures, each occupying three acres of land. Every greenhouse had an adjacent earthen room serving as a temperature regulating transitional space and also used for resting, living, and storage. Jiang Fengshou entered the earthen room, lifted the thick cotton curtain, and stepped into the greenhouse. The cold wind was left behind, enveloping him instantly with a comforting warmth that made him shiver pleasantly.
But then came a barrage of scolding.
"You lazy brat, where have you been slacking off? Haven't seen hide nor hair of you all day! What good are you if you're nowhere to be found when work needs doing, yet you're always first at the table for meals!"
Upon his entry, Song Shixia promptly shifted her verbal assault towards him.
Everyone was accustomed to this routine. He Cheng and Jiang Ya sat nearby, unsympathetically grinning at Jiang Fengshou. Shi Qiaoling emerged from between cucumber trellises, bucket in hand, joining in the laughter.
Jiang Fengshou grinned sheepishly and hastily defended himself, "Mother, I was at a meeting, it's important business!"
"Meeting? Meeting my foot!" Song Shixia scolded without hesitation. "Everyone's swamped with work, what use is having so many meetings? If you're bored, go haul manure at the village entrance instead! I bet you're just avoiding your chores, lazy bum!"
"Mother, it was a real meeting," Jiang Fengshou defended himself. "The village had an impromptu gathering and it wasn't my decision."
Inside the greenhouse, it was quite warm. As Jiang Fengshou spoke, he shed his padded jacket and smiled at the flourishing cucumber vines, remarking, "Look, we're almost done here, aren't we?"
"Yes, I can see you've been waiting for everything to finish before showing up," Song Shixia chided him disdainfully. "This greenhouse may be done, but there are more over there. We have four greenhouses in a row, and I wonder how long you plan to take breaks until."
Jiang Fengshou removed his jacket, set it aside, and picked up a water flask to pour himself a drink. While doing so, he said, "Mother, hold on, I have some important news to share with you."
"What could possibly be important from you? The biggest thing you should focus on is finding a partner, pronto! You're already pushing thirty and haven't even managed to get married yet. What good are you if you can't secure a wife?"
"Mother," Jiang Fengshou called out helplessly.
If there was one lingering concern for Song Shixia, it was that her youngest son had yet to find a wife. This issue had become a constant worry for both Song Shixia and Old Man Jiang.
Jiang Fengshou could be considered Xiaoling Village's - and even within the surrounding eight villages for miles around - "eligible bachelor." With his handsome appearance, military background as a former soldier, leadership role as captain of the village militia, and a family known for their integrity, his parents were highly respected. Most importantly, they were financially well off, his brother in law and elder brother were local success stories, recognized leaders in wealth creation. Over the past few years, Old Man Jiang and Song Shixia have prospered alongside their daughter's husband and eldest son, earning substantial income from cultivating low arch greenhouses.
However, in Song Shixia's eyes, Jiang Fengshou remained a "lifelong bachelor" without a partner or wife, which she deemed unacceptable due to his perceived inadequacy.
Even during his three year stint in the army, Song Shixia tried arranging potential matches for him, but with him away and unable to make decisions herself, nothing materialized. Now that Jiang Fengshou has been back from service for nearly a year, finding him a suitable match became the top priority.
