He Cheng made a hushing gesture, snickering as he crawled out from under the bed. Tiptoeing cautiously to the door, he checked and ensured it was securely bolted before feeling relieved and returning to sit beside Jiang Ya on the edge of the bed.

Resting his chin on her shoulder, He Cheng gazed at her with accusatory eyes, striving to portray himself as pitifully abandoned. Feeling the heavy weight, Jiang Ya couldn't bear it and gently pushed him away.

"You knew I entered?" He Cheng asked.

Of course, Jiang Ya knew; they had that level of understanding between them. If she hadn't been aware, this rascal might not have managed to sneak in successfully.

When the great-grandmother left earlier, the entire family went outside to bid farewell. As Jiang Ya watched discreetly, she caught sight of someone's head briefly peeking over the wall. Walking behind everyone else, she quickly shielded the view with her body. Once they reached the doorway, exchanging final goodbyes while Old Man Jiang escorted the great-grandmother to the alley entrance, Jiang Ya intentionally leaned against the doorframe, blocking half of it with her body.

In that brief moment, He Cheng swiftly climbed the wall, slipped along its base, and darted into the west room where she resided.

"You're incredibly daring! My whole family is here. Just wait and see how you'll manage to leave later."

Whispering quietly, Jiang Ya's exasperated expression appeared even more vivid.

Feeling smug, He Cheng said, "So what if I don't leave? I'll sleep here tonight and slip out tomorrow morning after your family has gone."

"Won't your family notice you're missing?"

"What do you think? It's not like I'm a three-year-old who got lost. Anyway, since I'm already inside, let them worry."

Since arriving in this era, he had been sneaking out every night for several days straight, so Bao Lanxiang and the others likely grew accustomed to it. Even if he stayed longer now, no one would notice. Shao Chunlai often played outside late into the night and probably wouldn't be concerned about him either.

"No way, get back home," Jiang Ya insisted. "The longer you stay, the greater the risk. If you're discovered, don't drag me down with you."

He Cheng felt aggrieved, where was their camaraderie as revolutionary comrades?

As they spoke, footsteps approached from outside, followed by Song Shixia knocking on the door. "Erya, open up."

A moment of silence fell.

Inside, both held their breaths, exchanging a glance. Then Jiang Ya raised her voice and responded, "Mother, what is it?"

"Open the door."

"Mother, just wait a minute, I'm washing my feet right now."

While speaking, Jiang Ya signaled He Cheng to hand her a towel, subtly nodding towards the bed's underside.

With a sense of despair, He Cheng hastily scrambled back under the bed. From the angle through the door crack, it should have been impossible to see the bed, but Jiang Ya still felt anxious. After ensuring He Cheng was well-hidden, she pulled the quilt down further and dragged the chair closer to obstruct any view. Pretending to arrange her luggage, she purposefully placed her bags on the chair before shuffling over to open the door.

"Mother, what's up?" Jiang Ya asked, leaning against the doorway.

"I need to give you some instructions." As Song Shixia spoke, she reached out to push the door open. Unable to stop her and even more fearful of showing any hesitation, Jiang Ya quickly stepped aside, allowing her mother to enter.
