Every October, Layla hosts a costume party at her house that all of us that work at the coffee shop is invited to. She also invites friends of hers and Erica's, and she says it's a night where we can let loose with each other.
I went last year, and it was a fun time. Good food, great drinks, interesting conversation. I dressed up as Alex Vause from Orange is the New Black, and it was well received, considering a lot of the people that come are LGBTQ+.
The weekend after the open mic night, Layla hosted her costume party. The days of the week prior seemed to blend together, so I was glad to do something different that Saturday night.
I decided to go as Wednesday Addams. I didn't want to put too much effort into it, and I owned a dress that could easily pass for Wednesday. I did my hair into two long braids and put on dark makeup.
Layla doesn't live far from me, in a townhome with Erica and their three cats. As I was about to leave, I noticed my mom on the couch watching a movie, a glass of wine in hand.
She smiled when she saw me, "Hello, Wednesday Addams! You look great, honey."
I smiled back, "Thank you. I'm going to that costume party tonight that I told you about earlier in the week."
"Oh, that's right! If you get too drunk and need a ride home, call me."
"Mom. You know I don't drink."
"I know, but you're young. You may change your mind when you see all of the other people having a drink."
Nope.
"That's not going to happen."
"If you say so, Delilah."
"Are you staying home tonight?" I asked her.
She nodded, "I am. I'm going to order some Thai food, drink some wine, and have myself a night in."
"Sounds nice. I'm going to head out, I'll be back probably around midnight or so."
"Have fun and drive safely," my mom said, and then turned back to her movie.
I find it ironic that my mom is always telling me to not drive while under the influence, or drive safe, yet she does the exact opposite.
When I got to Layla's house, I found a parking spot in the shared lot of her development, and I walked up to her house. The door was open, and I could hear "We Fell in Love in October" by girl in red playing.
Very gay.
When I walked in, I immediately searched for one of my co workers, and I found Diego and Laura standing by the food. Diego was dressed as cowboy, and Laura wore a banana suit.
I couldn't help but laugh as I saw Laura. Laura is 25 years old, and basically Layla's right hand. She is, like most of us that work at the shop, gay. Laura presents more butch/masculine, and she's a genuinely nice person, like Diego. She also is a goofball, as shown by her costume.
Laura's girlfriend, Carmen, was also standing with her and Diego. Carmen wore a much more form fitting skeleton suit.
"Delilah, come join us!" Diego beckoned me over, and Laura and Carmen waved and smiled.
"You all look great," I said as I walked over, "Laura, I love the banana suit."
"And I love your Wednesday Addams costume," Laura said to me, "I should have Layla turn on that Lady Gaga song so you can do the dance."
"No way," I laughed, "You won't catch me dancing."
"We were just about to grab some food," Carmen said to me, her heavy Spanish accent coming through, "Get yourself a plate."
