A couple of nights later, Emily and I had a girl's night.
It was the first time that I felt apprehensive to see my best friend.
Emily ordered a bunch of sushi for us, which was our favorite to eat together.
When I got to her house, we went down to the basement where there was a large platter of sushi.
"I just picked it up," Emily said, "From our favorite place, Sakura."
I smiled at Emily, "You're the best."
We sat on her couch together, and I picked up the chopsticks.
"How is Evan doing?" I asked her.
Emily brightened, "He's great. I feel so lucky that I met him, honestly. It's my first mature, healthy relationship. I feel like I finally know what it feels like to be loved properly."
I smiled at Emily, "I really am so happy for you. If anyone deserves it, it's you."
Emily started to blush as she said, "He's also really good at fucking."
"I thought you looked extra relaxed," I joked.
Emily blushed even harder, "Is it that obvious?"
"I'm just kidding!" I laughed, "But once again, you deserve it. I know you've had some...lousy experiences to say the least."
"Yeah, the only one that ever came close to Evan was, well, Poppy," Emily rolled her eyes as she said Poppy's name.
Meanwhile my whole body grew warm at the mere mention of Poppy.
She's definitely the best that I've ever been with.
"Well, now you have Evan and you don't even have to think about the others," I smiled at Emily.
"Exactly," Emily laughed, "Thank god for that!"
I ate a spicy tuna roll, and said, "Amen, sister."
Emily gave me a knowing look and said, "You know how much I want you to find what I have with Evan one day. You say how much I deserve it, but so do you, Delilah."
Do I?
I was quiet for a moment, having a mental debate.
Do I just rip the band aid off and tell Emily about Poppy and I?
It was on the absolute tip of my tongue when Emily asked, "Are you okay? You've gone quiet on me."
"All good," I said in a reassuring tone, "It just means a lot to me how much you care."
Now isn't the time.
"Of course I care. You're my best friend. Future maid of honor, when I hopefully marry Evan."
"Oh wow, you're really serious about him."
Emily nodded, "I am. We're even talking about moving in together in a few months while I'm in PA school."
"Not too far away, I hope?"
Emily shook her head, "Nope, around here. Don't worry Delilah, I'm never leaving you."
Normally these words from Emily would have comforted me, but they were making me even more apprehensive.
I'm not sure how much longer I can keep this from her.
I told Poppy how I was feeling the next day when she came over to my house.
"I don't know how much longer I can go without telling Emily. She's going to be fucking pissed, but part of me thinks it would be better if I told her sooner than later."
