Rose waves to her parents and her aunt and uncle.
She's heading into her fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, along with her cousin, Albus.
She follows her younger brother, Hugo, down the Hogwarts Express, both searching for an empty compartment. Albus has disappeared, but she chose to stick with Hugo, who was going into his third year, because he was slightly nervous and she didn't have too many friends at Hogwarts. They arrived at one of the compartments, which only holds a third year girl with flaming red hair and blue eyes. She smiles at Hugo.
"Hey, Lily," Hugo says, returning the smile.
Lily is Rose and Hugo's cousin, and also Hugo's best friend. She's also going into third year at Hogwarts, but she looks much more excited than her nervous friend.
Rose gives Lily a little smile, and sits down across from her so she can stare out the window.
"Did you hear?" Lily says, breaking Rose's dazed look. "Their having the Yule Ball this year!"
"Yeah, but dad said that only anyone in their fourth year or above can go," Hugo replies sadly.
Lily shakes her head. "No! James told me that their letting third years in!"
"And you believe James?"
She frowns, realizing he's right.
Though the two start talking about other things, such as classes, Rose stays quiet, her mind racing.
There's a ball this year? I didn't know that...She thinks, frowning at the window.
A little while later, long after they had stuffed themselves with treats from the trolley, the three take turns changing into their robes. Rose goes last, walking out of the compartment and down the train. She isn't completely paying attention to where she is going, her mind still on the thought of the ball, and she bumps into someone, breaking out of her trance. She looks up.
A boy slightly taller than her stares at her, his eyes icy gray, but soft, and his hair white blond. She recognizes him. He is Scorpius Malfoy, the boy her parents had warned her about. He's wearing a black robe with a Slytherin patch on the front. He is quite charming looking, but Rose glares at him, causing him to look at her in confusion. She pushes past him before he's able to apologize.
