After the first years are sorted into their houses (a good share into Gryffindor), the students help themselves to the feast prepared by the paid house elves. Rose doesn't understand how Lily and Hugo can eat so much when they had been completely stuffed only hours ago, for her plate only consists of a few things.
When they all exit the Great Hall, heading to their common rooms, a Slytherin boy catches up with a Gryffindor girl, grinning stupidly.
"Wanted to apologize for bumping into you on the train," Scorpius says. He sticks out his hand. "I'm Scorpius."
"Rose," Rose replies, but she doesn't take his hand, instead she walks away swiftly towards the Gryffindor tower.
Rose tries to shake off the fact that Scorpius was good looking, and certainly more nice than most Slytherins, but this proved difficult. She can't get the image of him out of her head.
In the Gryffindor common room, Rose's cousins, Fred (the second) and Roxanne Weasley, are telling the first years made-up stories of monsters that are locked up in the castle. Rose rolls her eyes and walk into the corner of the room, falling into the puffy red armchair and pulling books out of her bag. The other fourth years start teasing her for studying before they even have work, but she ignores them and continues reading her Muggle Studies book. This only causes more jokes and eye rolls, and soon Fred and Roxanne join in, just for fun.
Some time after the rest of the fourth year girls fall asleep, Rose hears something coming from the common room. She can't sleep, anyway, so she slides out of bed, tiptoeing across the cool tile floor and opening up the door. She walks quietly down the stairs, and peeks into the common room, which is dim. The embers still shining in the big stone fireplace is the only source of light. Standing in front of the portrait hole, Roxanne and Fred creep out, closing the door behind them. Curious, Rose follows them as quietly as she can, lagging behind and staying in any shadows she can.
Fred and Roxanne walk for a little while, stopping suddenly every now and then and looking up and down the walls. They are still on the seventh floor when they stop and start touching the empty wall space, closing their eyes and walking in front of the wall over and over again. Rose is about to leave, believing her cousins have gone mad, when a door appears out of nowhere in the wall. The siblings grin and open the door, entering inside. Rose blinks, wondering what just happened, but the door is slowly starting to disappear again, and without thinking she darts out from the shadows and rushes inside.
