Prologue
It was definitely Halloween. The darkened sky shifted with thin clouds as distant voices of children and adults wandered the estate, hoping to knock on the few doors left with their pumpkins still lit. The air was bitter as the breeze shifted the amber leaves across the ground, passing by a tapping foot.
Keely sighed as she waited for her best friend, who in typical fashion was late. Halloween was a well celebrated holiday in the small countryside town, always holding a promise of surprises when the night finally arrived. And as always, Hallows Queen had been building up the excitement to her yearly exclusive, and expensive, Halloween bash. And this year, they planned to sneak in and finally see the Hallows Queen party for themselves.
Keely and Tay had been friends since they started middle school. Without much of a family to rely on, Tay had spent most of her teen years escaping to the warmth that Keelys house brought. Where her parents welcomed her in as their third adopted child. Without question, an extra plate was laid for her at dinner time. It was this familiarity that had Keely knowing Tay was going be late, the girl had never been on time to anything. She had hoped on a night as important as this however, maybe once Tay would have been here at the correct time, but she stood unsurprised as she checked both ways waiting to see her friend.
Pulling her long cloak tighter to her body to retain warmth, she debated the brilliance of her grim reaper costume. While beautiful, with its floor length skirt, a mix of grey and white fabric and plunging neckline that heightened her femininity, she wished she had lined the grey cloak with something warmer to combat the autumn air. It was certainly spooky season.
'Surprise bitch!" Keely turned quickly, amused and annoyed at her friend. Her smile dropped when she saw her.
"Tay! What the fuck is that?' Keely gestured to Tay in her entirety.
"I"m a ghost, ya know? WhoOoOoo, scary." Tay waved her arms as the bed sheet she had draped over her head danced with the movement. Keely deadpanned her.
'I'm serious, Tay. This is the biggest party of the year, of the town, and you're wearing a half arsed bed sheet. You don't think you're gonna stand out in that?" Tay flung a hand to her heart. Her eyes and mouth seen only through the small holes cut out, glared back at Keely.
"I made an effort." She huffed. 'I'm not just a ghost, I'm a fashion ghost that trained in ghost fashion at the elite school of fashion for ghouls. Hence the belt.' Tay fidgeted with the belt tied over the bed sheet at her waist, twisting so the buckled rested forward. Keely sighed, deflated.
"You're a bed sheet. You came dressed as a bed sheet." Tay pondered this for a moment.
"Tis I, the haunted bed sheet. WhooOOoOooOo."
Keely laughed as she shoved shoulders with her friend, shaking her head. She had grown accustomed to Tay's unique way of life. The fact it impedied on her normal way of life was a different discussion.
"I'm just glad you're only five minutes late instead of an hour."
'Awww come on man, I aint that bad.' Tay laughed, trying to look at her watch before realising it was covered by the bed sheet draped over her.
"That probably explains why." she laughed while keely tried not to smile at her.
"Hey shit face! Hey Tea Leaf, where you guys going?" Keely groaned as Tay jumped at the sound of the voice, spinning to greet Shay.
'Where are you going?' Keely reflected, eyeing her older sister suspiciously who wore a casual red dress with devil horns on her head. Only one year apart, they grew up best friends, and with Tay being a part of the furniture, they all fought like siblings as much as they enjoyed each other's company and the laughs that came from it. Mostly, with Tay and Shay being the same age, they took every opportunity to gang up on Keely.
