Billy stood outside Nana's house, the faint sound of music and laughter drifting through the night air. His hands were stuffed in his pockets, and for the first time in a long while, he felt unsure of what to do. He hadn't planned on coming to the party, but something had pushed him to show up, and now, as he stood there, he wasn't sure if it had been a good idea.
Taking a deep breath, he squared his shoulders and stepped through the gate. The backyard was lively, filled with people chatting, laughing, and dancing. The energy was infectious, and yet, all Billy could think about was finding Babe.
His eyes scanned the crowd until they landed on him—sitting on a bench near the edge of the party, talking to some guy Billy didn't recognize. Babe was laughing, but something about the way he was leaning back, his body language stiff, told Billy that his mind wasn't fully present.
And then, a strange feeling Billy couldn't quite place tugged at him. His gaze flickered to the guy sitting beside Babe—Kai, if he remembered the name correctly. They were talking, but from where Billy stood, the conversation looked just a little too close for comfort.
Jealousy. The word floated into Billy's mind before he could stop it, but he quickly brushed it aside. I'm not jealous. It's just... weird. That's all.
Billy took another breath, steeling himself as he made his way across the yard. As he approached, Babe's gaze flickered upward, catching sight of him. For a split second, their eyes met, and Billy swore he saw a flash of surprise—and something else—in Babe's expression.
Kai was the first to notice Billy's presence, his grin widening. "Hey, man, didn't know you were coming to the party."
Billy nodded, his eyes never leaving Babe. "Yeah, just decided to swing by."
Babe, now visibly tense, shifted in his seat, clearly unsure of how to react to Billy's sudden appearance. "Hey," he said, his voice quieter than usual. "Didn't expect to see you here."
Billy forced a smile, but inside, the knot of confusion and frustration tightened. "Yeah, I figured we could talk."
Kai, sensing the tension between them, stood up with a knowing grin. "Well, I'll leave you two to catch up. Babe, I'll see you around."
Babe nodded, watching as Kai walked away, leaving him alone with Billy. The air between them felt thick, charged with unspoken words and unresolved feelings.
"You wanted to talk?" Babe asked, his voice unsure.
"Yeah," Billy said, running a hand through his hair. "Somewhere quiet, though."
Babe hesitated but nodded, standing up. "There's a garden area just over there. It's quieter."
They walked in silence to the garden, the sounds of the party fading behind them as they found themselves in a small, secluded spot with a stone bench surrounded by trees and flowers. The atmosphere was peaceful, but the tension between them was anything but.
Billy leaned against the railing, arms crossed, while Babe sat on the bench, fidgeting with his hands in his lap. For a few moments, neither of them spoke. The silence stretched on, the weight of the conversation they weren't having pressing down on both of them.
Finally, Billy broke the silence. "I saw you talking to that guy. Kai."
Babe looked up, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. "Yeah, he's in one of my classes. Why?"
Billy shrugged, but the question had already hung in the air too long for it to feel casual. "I don't know. Just... felt like things were a little off between us lately. And seeing you with him..."
Babe blinked, his mind racing to catch up with what Billy was implying. "Wait. You think...?"
Billy didn't answer right away, his jaw tightening slightly. He knew he was being irrational, that whatever he was feeling had less to do with Kai and more to do with the strange distance that had grown between him and Babe over the past few weeks.
"I don't know," Billy admitted, his voice low. "It's just... you've been acting different, and I'm trying to figure out why."
Babe's heart pounded in his chest, a swirl of emotions threatening to overwhelm him. He hadn't expected Billy to confront him like this, and now that it was happening, he wasn't sure how to handle it.
"I'm not—" Babe started, but the words caught in his throat. He couldn't bring himself to lie again, but the truth felt too heavy to say out loud.
Billy took a step closer, his eyes searching Babe's face. "Is it me? Did I do something to push you away?"
Babe shook his head quickly. "No, it's not you."
"Then what is it?" Billy asked, his voice edged with frustration. "I don't understand, Babe. We've always been close, but now it feels like you're slipping away, and I don't know how to fix it."
Babe felt his chest tighten. The last thing he wanted was for Billy to think he had done something wrong, but the truth was so much more complicated than that. His feelings for Billy, the fear of ruining their friendship, the constant push and pull of wanting to tell him everything but being too scared to do it—it all weighed on him, and he didn't know how much longer he could hold it in.
"I don't know how to explain it," Babe whispered, his voice barely audible. "It's just... complicated."
Billy frowned, his frustration mounting. "You keep saying that, but you're not telling me anything. If there's something going on, if I did something, I need you to be honest with me. You can't keep shutting me out."
Babe looked away, his hands trembling slightly as he tried to gather his thoughts. He could feel the walls he had built around himself starting to crack, but the fear of what would happen if those walls came down kept him frozen.
"I..." Babe's voice faltered, his throat tightening. The words were right there, on the tip of his tongue, but he couldn't bring himself to say them.
Billy watched him, his eyes filled with a mix of confusion and hurt. "Whatever it is, Babe, just tell me. Please."
Babe swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his chest. Just say it. Just tell him.
But the fear—of rejection, of losing Billy—was too strong. He couldn't do it.
"I'm sorry," Babe whispered, his voice breaking. "I can't."
The silence that followed was deafening. Billy stared at him for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Finally, he sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"I don't get it," Billy said, his voice soft but edged with frustration. "I don't get why you can't just talk to me. We've always been able to talk about anything, so why is this different?"
Babe felt a tear slip down his cheek before he could stop it. He quickly wiped it away, but the damage was done. He couldn't keep pretending that everything was fine. But at the same time, he couldn't bring himself to confess the feelings he had been hiding for so long.
"I don't want to lose you," Babe whispered, his voice barely audible.
Billy's expression softened, his frustration giving way to concern. "You're not going to lose me, Babe. But you have to trust me. Whatever's going on, we'll figure it out. Together."
Babe nodded weakly, but the words felt hollow. He wanted to believe Billy, but the fear still clung to him, refusing to let go.
