Babe woke up the next morning, the weight of the previous night's conversation with Billy still pressing down on him. He stared up at the ceiling, feeling the tension sitting heavy in his chest. It wasn't just the conversation itself—it was everything he had been holding in for so long. All the emotions, all the confusion—it was becoming too much to bear.
The worst part was knowing that Billy had done nothing wrong. He had been understanding, patient, and concerned. The guilt of shutting him outweighed heavily on Babe's heart. I can't keep doing this. The thought gnawed at him as he lay in bed, trying to make sense of his feelings.
But what could he do? Confessing would change everything, and Babe wasn't sure if he was ready to face that yet. Still, the idea of keeping it all bottled up seemed impossible now.
With a groan, Babe rolled out of bed, deciding he couldn't spend the whole day trapped in his thoughts. He needed to clear his head. Maybe getting out of the house would help.
Later that morning, Babe found himself at a small, bustling cafe on the edge of campus, hoping the change of scenery would distract him. He had just ordered his coffee and was scanning the room for a place to sit when he heard a familiar voice.
"Babe?"
His heart skipped a beat, and he turned to see Billy standing a few feet away, holding his own cup of coffee. His expression was calm, but there was something in his eyes—curiosity, maybe even suspicion.
"Hey," Babe managed, forcing a smile despite the sudden knot in his stomach. "Didn't expect to see you here."
Billy gave him a small smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yeah, just grabbing something before heading to class."
They stood there for a moment, the air between them filled with an awkward tension. Babe could feel his pulse quicken as he realized there was no avoiding this interaction. Billy wasn't going to let things slide this time.
"Mind if I sit with you?" Billy asked, his tone casual but his eyes watching Babe closely.
Babe hesitated for a second before nodding. "Sure."
They found a quiet corner in the cafe, the bustling noise around them a stark contrast to the heavy silence between them. Babe fiddled with the edge of his cup, avoiding Billy's gaze as he struggled to figure out what to say.
Billy broke the silence first. "You've been quiet lately."
Babe looked up, meeting Billy's eyes for a split second before glancing away again. "Yeah, I guess I've just had a lot on my mind."
Billy leaned back in his chair, studying Babe with an intensity that made him squirm. "I get that. But it feels like more than just school stress. I know when something's bothering you, Babe."
The words hung in the air between them, and Babe could feel the weight of Billy's suspicions growing. He swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his chest. He's onto me. He knows.
"I... I don't know how to explain it," Babe said quietly, his voice barely audible above the noise of the cafe. "It's complicated."
Billy's gaze didn't waver. "Complicated how?"
Babe could feel his walls starting to crumble. The truth was right there on the tip of his tongue, but the fear of what would happen if he said it out loud kept him frozen. He didn't know if he was ready to face the consequences of confessing his feelings.
"I don't want to make things weird between us," Babe finally whispered, his voice shaking slightly.
Billy's brow furrowed, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. "Weird how?"
Babe hesitated again, the weight of his unspoken feelings pressing down on him like a heavy stone. He could feel himself cracking under the pressure, but he still wasn't sure if he could bring himself to say the words he had been holding in for so long.
Before he could respond, a familiar voice interrupted them.
"Well, well, well, look who's here." Nana appeared at their table, his usual playful grin on his face, but there was a seriousness in his eyes that Babe didn't miss.
Babe shot Nana a pleading look, hoping he would somehow lighten the tension, but Nana just raised an eyebrow at him. "Mind if I join, or is this one of those deep, serious convos?"
Babe let out a shaky laugh, grateful for the distraction. "It's fine. Sit."
Nana took a seat, glancing between the two of them with a knowing look. "You two look like you've been having quite the chat."
Billy leaned back in his chair, his gaze still fixed on Babe. "We were just talking."
Nana, sensing the tension, leaned forward, his voice softening. "Babe, I know you've got a lot going on in that head of yours, but maybe it's time to stop overthinking everything. Just say what's on your mind."
Babe felt a lump form in his throat. He knew Nana was right. He had been running from his feelings for too long, and it was only making things harder. But how could he just come out and say it?
Billy's eyes flicked between Babe and Nana, and Babe could tell he was piecing things together. The suspicion in his gaze had turned into something more—something closer to understanding.
"Whatever it is, you don't have to hide it," Billy said quietly, his voice gentle but firm. "We'll figure it out."
Babe's heart ached. He could feel his walls crumbling completely now, the weight of his feelings becoming too much to hold back. But still, he hesitated.
Nana placed a hand on Babe's shoulder, his voice soft but insistent. "You can't keep carrying this alone, babe. Just tell him."
Babe swallowed hard, his mind racing. He knew he couldn't keep running forever. The truth was going to come out eventually, whether he wanted it to or not. And maybe, just maybe, it was time to stop being afraid.
"I..." Babe's voice faltered, his hands trembling slightly as he tried to find the words. "Billy, I—"
But before he could finish, his phone buzzed on the table, the sound cutting through the tension like a knife. Babe flinched, breaking eye contact with Billy as he glanced at the screen. It was a message from Kai.
Kai: Hey, it was great talking to you last night. We should hang out again soon.
Babe's stomach dropped, his heart sinking as he realized how this might look to Billy.
Billy glanced at the message, his expression hardening slightly. "Kai again?"
Babe opened his mouth to explain, but the words wouldn't come. He could feel the fragile moment slipping away, the chance to confess disappearing as quickly as it had come.
Nana gave him a sympathetic look but didn't say anything, knowing that the moment had passed.
Billy stood up, his jaw tight. "I have to get to class. We'll talk later."
Babe watched as Billy walked away, the weight of his unsaid words pressing down on him like a leaden cloak. He had let the moment slip through his fingers, and now, he wasn't sure if he'd get another chance.
