Billy sat on his bed, his phone resting beside him, the soft glow of the screen still lighting up with Babe's message. He hadn't opened it yet. Not because he didn't want to, but because he wasn't sure what to do next.
Hey, can we talk? I'm sorry about yesterday.
Billy stared at the words, a mixture of relief and confusion swirling inside him. Babe was reaching out, and that should have made things easier, but it didn't. There was still a knot in his chest, tightening with every second that passed as he thought about the last few days. Babe's behavior, the tension between them, the way he had avoided answering anything directly—it all added up to something, but Billy wasn't sure what that something was.
He let out a frustrated sigh, leaning back against the headboard. His mind kept circling back to that moment at the cafe when he had been so close to getting the truth out of Babe. But then the message from Kai had ruined everything, casting a shadow over the moment.
Kai. The name alone sparked a faint feeling of jealousy in the back of Billy's mind, one he didn't want to acknowledge but couldn't ignore. Was that what had been bothering Babe? Was there something going on between him and Kai?
Billy shook his head, trying to clear the thoughts. It doesn't make sense. If there was something between Babe and Kai, why would Babe be so distant, so conflicted? Nothing about the situation added up.
He picked up his phone again, staring at the message. He wanted to talk to Babe, to figure out what was going on, but he was also hesitant. He didn't want to push too hard, didn't want to make things worse. But at the same time, he couldn't just let this tension hang between them forever.
After a few moments of contemplation, Billy opened the message, typing out a short response.
Billy: Yeah, we can talk. Meet me at the library tomorrow after class?
He hit send before he could overthink it, letting out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. At least it's a start.
The following day, Billy sat in a quiet corner of the library, tapping his fingers nervously on the table in front of him. He had gone back and forth in his mind about what to say to Babe, but every time he thought he had the right words, they slipped away like water through his fingers.
He wasn't used to feeling this unsure, this out of control. Normally, he trusted his instincts, but with Babe, everything felt different. Every conversation, every look, every little interaction seemed loaded with hidden meaning, and it was starting to get to him.
Billy glanced up as he heard the soft sound of footsteps approaching. Babe appeared at the entrance of the study area, his expression nervous but determined. Their eyes met, and for a brief moment, Billy felt that familiar warmth—an undeniable connection between them—but it was quickly swallowed by the uncertainty that had been building for days.
Babe approached slowly, pulling out the chair across from Billy and sitting down with a quiet sigh. He looked tired, like he hadn't slept much, and Billy's heart ached at the sight.
"Hey," Babe said softly, his voice laced with hesitation.
"Hey," Billy replied, his gaze steady but gentle. He could tell this wasn't going to be an easy conversation, but it was one they needed to have.
For a moment, neither of them spoke, the silence between them thick with unspoken words. Billy watched as Babe fidgeted with the edge of his sleeve, his usual confidence replaced with uncertainty.
"I'm sorry about the last few days," Babe said finally, breaking the silence. "I know I've been weird. I didn't mean to push you away."
Billy nodded slowly, though the knot in his chest remained. "I get it. But it feels like there's more to it than just being stressed."
Babe hesitated, his eyes dropping to the table. "There is. I just... I don't know how to say it."
Billy's heart thudded in his chest. This is it. Whatever had been weighing Babe down, whatever had been building between them, it was about to come out. But as much as Billy wanted answers, he wasn't sure if he was ready to hear them.
"You can tell me," Billy said softly. "Whatever it is, I'm not going anywhere."
Babe glanced up at him, and for the first time, Billy saw the vulnerability in his eyes. It was like the walls Babe had been holding up for so long were starting to crumble, piece by piece.
"I've been... scared," Babe admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't want to mess things up between us."
Billy's brow furrowed in confusion. "Mess things up how?"
Babe's hands trembled slightly as he struggled to find the right words. "I—" He swallowed hard, his throat tight with the weight of what he was about to say. "I don't know how to explain it."
Billy's heart raced, but he forced himself to stay calm. "Take your time."
The silence stretched between them again, but this time it felt different—like something important was about to shift.
Babe closed his eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath before finally speaking again. "Billy, I—" His voice faltered, the words catching in his throat. "I don't want to lose you."
Billy's heart ached at the raw emotion in Babe's voice. He reached across the table, gently placing his hand on top of Babe's. "You're not going to lose me. But you have to trust me, okay? We'll figure this out."
Babe nodded weakly, but the fear was still there, lingering in his eyes. He had come so close to saying the words that had been eating him alive, but he still couldn't bring himself to fully confess.
Billy gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. "Whenever you're ready, I'll be here."
