The atmosphere in the room felt unbearably heavy after Felix's quiet acceptance. Felix's heart, already fragile, felt as if it was cracking further under the weight of their situation. He had wanted so much more from their engagement, even if it was forced-a glimmer of hope, some connection. Instead, Hyunjin's offer of distance only made him feel more isolated.
Felix sat there, his hands trembling slightly as he tried to focus on his breathing, willing himself not to break down in front of the alpha. He could feel the unshed tears burning in the back of his eyes, but he didn't want to cry. Not now. Not here. It felt like everything was spiraling out of control, and the future, which was supposed to be filled with joy and possibilities, now felt uncertain and bleak.
Hyunjin's gaze flickered to Felix's downcast eyes, and his chest tightened with guilt. They were both trapped, it seemed-trapped by expectations, by the roles they were forced to play, by the growing rift between them that neither knew how to bridge.
Felix suddenly stood up, breaking the suffocating silence. "I think I'll head to bed early," he murmured softly, his voice void of the usual brightness that used to fill the room. Without waiting for a response, he walked towards his bedroom, leaving Hyunjin alone on the couch.
Hyunjin's eyes followed Felix as he left the room, his body frozen in place as the soft click of the door shutting echoed through the now-empty space. The alpha leaned back against the couch, running a hand through his hair in frustration. He wasn't used to feeling this way-so lost, so unsure of himself. Then he bid his farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Lee and left with a heavy and unsettled heart.
The cold truth began to sink in: maybe this marriage, this bond that was supposed to unite them, was tearing them apart instead.
Inside his bedroom, Felix stood by the window, hyunjin's car fading away to the dark. The weight of everything-the engagement, the expectations, Hyunjin's words-settled heavily on his chest. He wanted to scream, to cry, to make sense of the confusion that had been swirling in his mind for days, but all he could do was stand there, staring blankly into the night.
He thought about Hyunjin's offer to live separately, to treat their marriage as nothing more than a business arrangement. It was supposed to give him freedom, wasn't it? But all it did was make him feel lonelier. Was this really how things were going to be between them? A marriage in name only, devoid of any real connection? The thought made Felix's heart ache.
He hugged his teddy closer to his heart, trying to hold himself together as the loneliness closed in around him. He had never felt so isolated before, not even when he was growing up under the strict eyes of his parents surrounded by bodyguards and maids every single day. Back then, he had always had hope-a hope that one day, he'd find someone who would love him for who he was, not because of family obligations. But now, even that hope seemed to be slipping away.
I can't do this, Felix thought to himself, eyes stinging with unshed tears. I can't pretend to be happy anymore.
If Hyunjin wanted distance, if he wanted to treat this marriage as nothing more than a business arrangement, then fine. Felix would play the part, but he would do it on his own terms.
No more tears. No more hoping for something that would never come. If this was how their life was going to be, then Felix would protect himself the only way he knew how-by shutting down.
With a final glance out the window at the sky, Felix made up his mind. He would go through with the engagement, with the wedding, with all the formalities their families demanded, but he would do it with a new armor around his heart. The bright, hopeful Felix that everyone knew, that Hyunjin had once admired from afar, would be buried beneath layers of ice.
