Saphira POV:
It felt like tomorrow took too long to get here. I didn't get any sleep that night, even though I knew I'd need my energy for our escape to succeed. The second I saw the sky light up, I quikly got up and started packing everything we'd need. I didn't even try to be quiet; I need them to wake up. After making sure we have everything, I turned and quickly got to work with the wood and rope. I forgot to check if the boat's oars were there or if they were in good condition, but I was luckily prepared for that and made my own oars. Last night, I only made one and ran out of rope, I wanted to leave and get more but Winifred needed my attention. So, now I'm using old materials from a shirt I dugged out of the pile and hope it will work.
''What are you doing?'' Silver yawned while rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, ''Get ready, we're leaving.'' After finishing the oar, I put it aside and moved to get everything else ready. ''What?'' There was obvious panic in Silvers voice, I turned around to see her close to tears. I quickly hushed her before she woke Winifred, ''What's wrong?'' I asked while whipping her tears, ''Y-you're gonna leave m-me?'' She hiccupped; I was confused why she would think that. ''No no, I would never leave you. You're my sister remember, we're leaving together.'' I explained, she looked doubtful. ''Promise?'' She asked with trembling lips. ''Why would you ever think I would leave you?'' I asked, I was surprised and worried. She didn't answer me and looked ready to start crying again. ''I promise Silver! I promise you and Winifred, I will never leave you.'' I looked her in the eyes as I declared this, ''Ok?'' She just nodded her head and I sighed in relief.
The sun was out fully now and people are leaving their 'homes' to start the day. I had a small crate with our things strapped to my back, Winifred in my arms and Silver is carrying the oars. We moved quickly through the broken down homes and passing people as they stare at us in confusion. Luckily, they didn't do or say anything as we left the village; they probably thought we finally lost our minds. We were running on the blacken cobblestones that leads to a bay. There wasn't much noice other than our heavy breathing. We were unfit, but I can't blame it on that alone.
Not far from where we are, stood the 'old' man with our boat. He wasn't alone though. That fact made me stop in my tracks. There was the young boy I expected, but there was another man with them. By his outfit and the scary mask he's wearing, he's with the marines. The marines don't dare venture further then the beaches of the island, so seeing one on the bay patrolling is surprising, but this one was alone. Unless his group isn't far behind him. This is what I was afraid of. The world government put our island on lockdown in hopes the virus won't spread further to other civilizations. No one can enter the island or leave the island.
I was ready to turn and leave, it's them or us and I wasn't about to let us get killed along with them. However, the sight before me stopped me in my tracks. The old man was holding the original oars, he dropped one and acted quickly. The marine was in arms reach so the old man grabbed his mask and ripped it off, causing the marine to panic over his mask and not see the old man lifting the oar above his head and smashing it into the marines head, knocking him out. I gasped in horror.
"Quickly!" The old man shouted our way, waving his free hand wildly. I didn't even realize he noticed us. The old man turned to the boat and threw the oars in and helped his son on board. I glanced at Winifred and Silver, making a decision. "It's now or never." I whispered to myself and started moving again, Silver right behind me. "Quickly, get in!" The old man started pushing the boat; I gave Winifred to the boy's waiting arms and quickly turned to help Silver into the boat. I put the crate I was carrying in the boat and went to help the old man. "Get in!" The old man shouted at me as I started to help push the boat, "You're not strong enough!" I shouted back, it's true, the old man hardly pushed the boat an inch into the water. It makes me wonder how he got the boat to the water.
