Fleeting Butterflies

The next day the sky was bright blue again, and a gentle breeze blew through the branches of the trees. The birds chirped happily, as if they wanted to celebrate the beautiful weather. It was one of those days when everything seemed light and bright, and Miwa felt like she had a new energy in her.

She walked with quick steps across the courtyard of the Kyoto Jujutsu High, her thoughts unconsciously in yesterday's conversation with Mechamaru. Something was different. It felt as if something had changed between them - like a spark that was barely noticeable, but still left a warm ember.

He will come back today,

she thought, and couldn't suppress a small smile. It was a thought that accompanied her since she woke up that morning. She couldn't say exactly why she was so looking forward to the reunion, but something in her felt that it was important.

Kokichi Muta, on the other hand, sat as usual at his secret position, from which he could control Mechamaru. His body was plagued by pain as always, but today it was different. Something in his heart seemed to be lighter, as if Miwa's presence had given him a breath of joy and hope that he hadn't felt for so long.

I'll see her again,

he thought, and his heartbeat quickened. It was a strange feeling - a tingling that ran through his body, even though he knew he could only talk to her through the doll. But it was more than that. It was the prospect of talking to her again, hearing her voice, seeing her smile.

The doll moved slowly across the yard until she finally saw Miwa, who was sitting on a bench near the trees. She looked dreamy, as if her thoughts were far away, but when she saw Mechamaru approaching, her face brightened.

"There you are," she said, and stood up to meet him. "I was already expecting you."

Kokichi's heart jumped a little.

She was waiting for me?

The thought was almost overwhelming. It was such a simple sentence, but it meant everything to him. In a world where he often felt forgotten and isolated, it was Miwa who pulled him out of this darkness.

"I promised I'd come," he replied, his voice calm, though everything in him tingled.

I'll always come if you want,

he added in his mind, but he didn't dare to say those words out loud.

Miwa sat back on the bench, and Mechamaru stopped in front of her. The silence between them this time was not unpleasant, but full of unspoken thoughts that both could not quite put into words. Kokichi watched her through the doll's eyes as she played with a strand of her blue hair and looked at the sky lost in thought.

"It's so beautiful today," she finally said, her voice quietly and softly. "Somehow everything feels better, you know?"

Kokichi didn't know exactly what she meant, but he felt it too. It was as if the world around her had become brighter, as if yesterday's conversation had changed something - something invisible, but impert.

Maybe... it's because we understand each other,

he thought, and a smile crept across his face, even though she couldn't see it.

"Yes," he finally replied, his voice soft. "It really feels better."

Miwa smiled and looked at him again. Her eyes sparkled in the sunlight, and for a moment Kokichi lost himself in that gaze.

How can someone be so beautiful?

It was not only her appearance, but the warmth and gentleness that she radiated. She was different from everyone else he had ever known.

"I thought," Miwa said suddenly, breaking the silence. "About what you said yesterday."

Kokichi felt his heartbeat speed up.

What did I say?

He asked himself, trying to remember every word.

Did he say something wrong?

Something that might have hurt her?

"You said I was strong," Miwa continued, her voice now a little firmer. "That I shouldn't underestimate myself."

Kokichi breathed a sigh of relief.

Oh, that...

He remembered how sincerely he had meant those words. He had seen how hard she fought, how hard she tried to overcome her insecurities. She was really strong for him.

"And I think... you're right," Miwa added, and her eyes met his again. "I really should believe in myself."

Kokichi felt his heart jump with joy.

She believes me...

It was a small victory, but it meant so much to him. She had taken his words seriously, and it seemed as if she had actually changed something in herself.

"I knew you'd see it at some point," he said, and his voice was softer than he intended. "You have it in you, Miwa. You just have to see for yourself."

Miwa smiled again, and this time it was a smile of gratitude. "Thank you, Mechamaru," she said quietly. "It really means a lot to me to hear that from you."

A storm of emotions raged in Kokichi. It was almost overwhelming how much her words touched him.

Why do I feel this way?

He asked himself, but the answer was actually already clear to him. He had fallen in love with Miwa. It wasn't just her smile, her kindness or her strength - it was everything about her. She brought light into his dark world, and he didn't know how he could ever live without that light again.

But he didn't dare tell her that. Not now, not like that.

She'll never be able to know...

he thought, feeling a soft pain rise in his heart. How could he ever tell someone like her what he really felt if he himself wasn't able to meet her in person? He was just a doll – a tool used to move around the world.

Miwa, on the other hand, had no swew of his inner struggles. She looked at him, with a smile that was so carefree and pure that it almost hurt him. She didn't know that Kokichi had feelings for her, and she didn't even know that she herself might have felt more for him than she had before.

"Mechamaru," she finally began, her voice a little uncertain. "May I ask you something?"

Kokichi became nervous.

What does she want to know?

But he forced himself to remain calm. "Of course," he replied, trying to hide his nervousness.

Miwa hesitated for a moment, as if she was looking for the right words. Then she looked at him, and there was something in her eyes that he couldn't quite interpret.

"Have you ever felt like you wanted to get to know someone better?" She finally asked, and her voice was soft, almost shy. "Someone you care about, but you don't know exactly why?"

Kokichi felt his heart stop for a moment.

Is she talking about me?

He asked himself, but he did not dare to hope. It was as if her words were right in his heart, and he didn't know how to respond to them.

"Yes," he said at last, and his voice was little more than a whisper. "I have that feeling."

Miwa looked at him, and for a moment it seemed like she was looking for something—an answer she couldn't put into words. But then she smiled softly and nodded.

"Me too," she said softly.
