"You look beautiful," Hermione said, her voice thick with emotion as she took in their daughter's transformation.
Severus nodded, his eyes shining with pride. "Just like your mother," he murmured.
They made their way downstairs, the excitement palpable in the air. Athena skipped ahead, her curiosity uncontainable. They stopped in front of the fireplace, its warm embers crackling and popping. The flickering light danced across her face, highlighting her eager expression. Severus took a deep breath, his hand hovering over the floo powder. "Ready?" he asked, his voice steady despite his racing heart.
With a nod from Hermione, he tossed the green powder into the flames. "Diagon Alley," he murmured, and with a whoosh, the fireplace roared to life, a swirling vortex of emerald light engulfing them. For a moment, the world around them was a blur, the heat of the flames licking at their skin. Then, as quickly as it had come, the sensation was gone, replaced by the cool, crisp air of the alley.
Athena's eyes grew wide with wonder as they stepped out of the fireplace, her little hand tightly clutching her father's. The cobblestone street was bustling with wizards and witches of all shapes and sizes, the smells of roasting chestnuts and sweet treats wafting through the air. "Oh wow," she breathed, her eyes darting from one magical shop to the next.
Hermione looked down at their daughter, her heart swelling with love and excitement. "What would you like to do first, Athena?" she asked, her voice filled with warmth.
"I want to explore!" Athena exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. She had heard so much about Diagon Alley from her mother's stories, and now she was finally here. "But afterward, I want to go to the bookstore. Can we go to the bookstore, Daddy?"
Severus couldn't resist her enthusiasm. "We can," he said, his voice filled with a warmth that had grown unfamiliar in the years since the war. "But first, let's visit Gringotts."
As they made their way to the goblin-run bank, the whispers grew louder, more insistent. Severus felt a knot of tension coil in his stomach. The last time he'd been here, he had been the feared and hated Professor Snape. Now, as he walked openly with Hermione and their daughter, the stares were no longer filled with fear or contempt, but rather curiosity and surprise.
Hermione's hand found his, squeezing tightly as they approached the grand entrance of Gringotts. Athena looked up at the towering building with wide eyes, her grip on his hand tightening as she took in the grandeur of the wizarding world's financial district.
Once inside, the coolness of the marble halls was a stark contrast to the cramped cabin they had left behind. The goblin's sharp eyes took them in, but Severus felt none of the hostility he had once known. They quickly completed their transaction, exchanging their muggle currency for a few gold coins. Athena's eyes shone with excitement as she watched the exchange, her curiosity piqued by the strange customs of this new world.
They stepped out into the bustling alley, the sound of laughter and chatter filling their ears. Severus took a deep breath, savoring the familiar scents of ink and parchment that wafted from the direction of Flourish and Blotts. He hadn't stepped foot in a bookstore since before the war, and the prospect filled him with a nostalgia that was bittersweet.
With a gentle squeeze of his hand, Hermione led him towards the shop, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Athena skipped ahead, her curiosity getting the better of her as she took in the sights and sounds of the alley. The bell above the door jingled merrily as they entered, the coolness of the bookstore's interior a welcome respite from the crisp fall air outside.
