Birthday Party

An hour later, the cabin was filled with the mouthwatering aromas of roasting chicken and baking cake. Athena's friends had arrived, their laughter and chatter filling the living room as they played games and told tall tales of their summer adventures. The parents had gathered in the small dining area, chatting amicably as they watched the children with fond smiles. It was a picture of domestic bliss that Severus had never thought he would be a part of.

Suddenly, the sound of an owl's wings cut through the air. Severus's gaze snapped to the window, his heart racing as he spotted a barn owl hovering just outside the glass, a letter clutched in its beak. He glanced around the room, his eyes darting from one muggle to the next, ensuring none had noticed the creature.

With a swiftness that belied his years, he darted over to the window, plucking the letter from the owl's grasp. The bird gave a soft, contented hoot as Severus offered it a treat, a small morsel of jerky that he had enchanted to be particularly appealing to owls. "Good girl, Whisper," he murmured, stroking her soft feathers before sending her off with another whispered incantation.

Severus turned back to the room, the letter weighing heavily in his hand. He took a moment to compose himself before making his way to the kitchen, where Hermione was now putting the finishing touches on Athena's birthday cake. The sight of her, her cheeks flushed from the warmth of the oven, her hair escaping from its usually meticulous bun in wisps of chestnut brown, brought a warmth to his chest that was almost painful.

"Hermione," he called out, his voice a little louder than necessary over the din of the party. She looked up, her eyes lighting up at the sight of him. "The letter from Harry has arrived," he said, extending the envelope towards her.

Her hand trembled slightly as she took it, her eyes never leaving his as she broke the seal and unfolded the parchment. Severus watched her, his heart in his throat as she read the words that would either grant them the acceptance they so desperately craved or shatter their fragile illusion of a normal life.

With a nod, Hermione handed him the letter. "It's a yes," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "They're coming."

Severus took the parchment, his eyes scanning the words that held the power to either validate their life or tear it apart. Harry and Ginny had agreed to come for Athena's birthday party. His stomach clenched with nerves. In just half an hour, the walls of their carefully constructed life would be breached, and there would be no turning back.

As the party wound down and the last of Athena's muggle friends were escorted home by their parents, the energy in the cabin shifted. The laughter grew softer, the games less frantic, and the air thick with the scent of the impending storm that was their secret. Severus took a deep breath and squared his shoulders, reminding himself that he had faced worse.

The final goodbye's were said, the door closing with a gentle click that echoed through the now-quiet cabin. Athena's best friends had been the last to leave, their eyes wide with tales of the magical creatures they had heard about in whispers and the games they had played, never knowing the reality hidden just beneath the surface of their friend's life.

With a wave of her wand, Hermione began the task of tidying up the cabin, her magic sweeping away the remnants of glitter and streamers from the party. Severus watched her, his heart swelling with admiration for her ability to navigate both the muggle and magical worlds with such ease. They worked together in a silent harmony, the warmth of their love a stark contrast to the coolness that had settled outside.

The sudden knock on the door made Hermione freeze, her wand hovering in mid-air. Severus took a step forward, his hand moving to the pocket where he kept his wand. The knock came again, this time more insistent. Hermione took a deep breath, her eyes meeting Severus's. He gave her a reassuring nod, his own wand at the ready.

With a flick of her wrist, she cast a quick protective charm around the cabin before striding to the door. She threw it open, revealing Harry, Ginny, and a slightly bewildered James standing on the porch. The sight of them sent a rush of relief and nervousness through her. "Welcome," she said, her voice a tad shakier than she would have liked.

Behind her, Severus stepped into view, his eyes locked on Harry's. The tension between them was palpable, a silent dance of suspicion and hope. Harry's gaze swept over him, searching for any signs of the man he had once feared, but all he saw was the love in his eyes as they rested on his wife and daughter.

"This is Athena," Hermione said, her voice steady as she placed a hand on her daughter's shoulder. "Athena, this is your Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny." She paused, her voice catching slightly. "And this is their son, James."

Athena looked up at Harry and Ginny with wide eyes, a shy smile playing on her lips. Then, with a sudden burst of energy, she grabbed James's hand. "Do you want to come play with me?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

James looked at his parents, who shared a knowing glance before Harry gave a nod of encouragement. "Of course," he said, his own smile warm and genuine.

Ginny took James's other hand, leading the children out of the room. "We'll be in the backyard, okay?" she called over her shoulder.

With the door to the kitchen closing behind them, Harry turned to Hermione, his eyes searching hers. "How?" he asked, his voice low. "How did he survive?"

Severus stepped forward, his expression one of solemn resolve. "I made a clone," he admitted, his voice heavy with the weight of his secret. "A perfect replica of myself, to take my place and to make people believe that I died fighting Voldemort."

Hermione took a step closer to Harry, her hand finding his arm. "We had to," she explained, her eyes pleading. "For Athena's safety, and for the future of our family."

Severus remained silent, his eyes never leaving Harry's, waiting for the reaction that could either be one of anger or acceptance. Harry searched her eyes, looking for the truth that she had kept from him for so long.

"How did you hide your pregnancy?" Harry asked, his voice a mix of shock and curiosity.

"With a bit of magic," Hermione replied, her eyes darting to the kitchen door where the children's laughter could be heard. "I had a clone, Harry. A copy of myself to take my place at Hogwarts, to continue my studies and to be with you all while I was with Severus in his chambers."

"But how did it start?" Harry pressed, his eyes flicking to Severus before returning to hers. "How did you two...?"

Severus stepped closer, his voice low and measured. "It began in the library," he said, his eyes never leaving Harry's. "We had several... encounters there. Discussions, initially."

Hermione took over the narrative, her voice softer. "We found ourselves in the same place, seeking solace amidst the books. We talked, Harry. Really talked. And as we did, we realized that we had more in common than we ever thought possible."

Severus's gaze remained locked on Harry, his expression a complex tapestry of emotions. "Our meetings grew more frequent, our discussions more personal. We found comfort in each other's company, a respite from the war that raged outside."

"We shared our fears, our hopes, our most guarded thoughts," Hermione added, her voice tinged with vulnerability. "And as we did, the walls between us began to crumble. We discovered a bond that neither of us could have ever anticipated."

For a moment, Harry said nothing, processing the revelation before a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. "I'm happy for you, Hermione," he finally said, his eyes gentle. "You both deserve a good life."

Hermione's shoulders relaxed slightly, the tension in the room easing. "Thank you, Harry," she said, her voice filled with relief.
