Author's POV

"Becs, you didn't have to do that, really. I get it, I fucked up, if it makes you guys feel better I can just go stay with Chris", Chloe explained. After Chloe left to UK a year ago, she left her apartment and car to Beca who then gave it back to Chloe's mom since she felt as if she needed to cut the ties and going back to the apartment would just make her think about Chloe more. Ever since then, Cindy, Chloe's mom, gave the apartment to Chloe's brother. "No, stay", Beca pleaded to Chloe. "I'm gonna go up and check on Emily", she added before making her way to Emily's room. She knocked on the door to get no response from Emily which made her open the door on her own. "Don't even", Emily let out from the side of the bed, her breathing unstable with some sobs. "Ems, come on", Beca sat next to her. "How do you do it?", Emily asked as she turned to the brunette next to her. Beca just looked down on her fidgeting hands and sighed. "How can you be okay with this? With her?", Emily asked. "Ems, you know me. You know how I feel about her, I can't. I can't say no to her, I can't just close the door on her. I've been leaving it slightly open ever since she left, just in case, just- just a small bit of hope that she might- y'know- she might love me again, that this would just be something we'd laugh about in a few years", Beca explained, the tears slowly streaming down her cheeks.

"Beca, she moved on."

"I know."

"I just couldn't stand watching you like that. Every night. I don't know how you still hold her up so high after what she did to you. Do you remember what happened? How scared everyone was? How scared you were? I- I thought- I thought I lost you.", Emily let out before letting her hands cover her face, hiding away from Beca. "Hey, I wouldn't let that happen now, would I?", Beca forced a smile and let her arm fall on Emily's shoulder. "Unfortunately, you're stuck with me, kiddo", she added with a light chuckle which made the taller brunette smile as well. "Just, just one thing I ask of you. Please. Go easy on Chloe, okay?", Beca met her eyes. "I'll be okay, you know me", she added. Emily just nodded and hummed in response, "I'll try", she said. The two hugged each other and stayed in each other's hold for a while. Beca agreed to give Emily some space to freshen up before she goes to bed. Just as she was walking to her room, she heard some clutter noise downstairs. She looked down the stairs to see the whole floor beneath her dark, but there was just a small flash of light shining from the kitchen.

"What are you doing there, creeper?", Beca chuckled as she turned on the light to see Chloe holding her phone close to her chest with a mug in hand. "Becs! You scared me!", Chloe whisper shouted to her which made the younger girl smile. "Why are you in the dark?", Beca asked and hopped on the counter next to the sink while Chloe washed the mug she was holding. "I didn't wanna wake anyone up and be more of a trouble to them", Chloe smiled awkwardly. "You're not a trouble. You get where they're coming from", Beca replied. There was a comfortable silence between them, as if they traveled back in time when they were together and this was just one of the night when they couldn't sleep and decided to spend some time together. "Hey, I'm- uh- sorry for snapping earlier. And for leaving you alone for lunch", Beca broke the silence and met her eyes. "No, no, it's- it's all fine. Beca, if anything, I should be the one apologising. I don't know what I was thinking, coming back after what I did, flaunting off Alice like she's some sort of trophy", Chloe said while she took out a box of orange juice from the fridge. Beca found herself flinching- cringing at Chloe when she brought up Alice. "I just- I thought you would've been fine.. y'know?", she added on to which Beca just nodded to. "I meant the question earlier. Did I meant anything to you? Y'know- was it just like- nothing to you? Everything that happened?", Beca finally met with Chloe's eyes who stood across from her, leaning against the fridge. "Of course not! Becs, you meant everything to me. That's why I did, what I did. I didn't want to hold you down like that. You were finally getting you dream fulfilled! With Emily and Stacie. And I didn't want to ruin that for you and getting you to leave your family and your friends behind just for me", Chloe said. "But I wanted to, Chlo. I was willing to, that's how much you meant to me. You just- you didn't give me a choice", Beca sighed out. "I know. It was fucked up. I know, just at the time- I thought that was better for the both of us", Chloe said.

"Do you love her?"

There was yet another moment of silence. But this was unlike the one earlier. This was.. tense. It was consuming.

"Yes."

"Does she make you happy?"

"Yes."

"That's all I want. I'm happy for you, Chlo. I really am", she moved closer to Chloe. "I'm glad that we spent the time we had together, and I'm so grateful for that. I wish you nothing but all the good things that the world has to offer", she smiled and ran her finger down Chloe's cheeks and Chloe found herself longing  for that touch as she lightly pushed her face into Beca's hold. Her body was embracing Beca, a sense of familiarity- of home. "I love you. With all my heart and soul. I hope she treats you the way that you deserve to be treated", Beca smiled, holding her tears back. The words floated around Chloe for a while, lingering and dancing around her head like some sort of synchronized dance. Before Chloe could respond, Beca made her way up the stairs and left Chloe in the spot of the kitchen light and buried herself in her bed. She turned to her side to see a framed picture of the day they first got Max. Right on cue, Max ran to her and jumped onto bed. "Hey, buddy", she smiled and pet him as she brought the picture to him. "We were good huh?", she chuckled.
