"MAYDAY, MAYDAY! Firefighter down! I repeat, Firefighter down! Captain? ANYONE?" Maya pauses hearing the static and crackle of the radio. "Anyone? Come in... PLEASE!" She yells through the mask of her helmet, panic rising as she turns back to her stricken colleague.
A colleague who also happens to be her very best friend in the world, wondering how the hell they ended up here. This couldn't really be how their story together ended, could it?
Maya frantically looked around the partially collapsed building, examining the pocket of the rubble the two of them were trapped inside... Looking, praying for a way out to materialise. Frustration mounting, she casts a look over at her friend, her mind refusing to accept what she knew... That a way out wouldn't matter much for him, the large metal rod impaling his midsection making it impossible for Maya alone to move him.
Huffing in frustration she makes her way back over to her friend, deciding it's smarter to conserve her air and keep him as calm as possible, whilst she prays their team get to them in time. "It's gonna be ok Leo... They will find us, you just need to hold on ok?" Maya pleads, desperately trying to keep the terror at the bleakness of the situation out of her voice.
"You think so?" He asks genuinely, slightly less successful than Maya at hiding the fear in his voice.
Maya smiles at him. "We are the best there is... This team is the best, we both know it, so yeah I do. You just need to stay calm ok, keep your breathing nice and regulated and stay awake ok."
He nods. "Ok..." He whispers.
Maya panics at the docile nature of her friend, desperate to keep him awake and alert she starts to talk. "Hey, remember when we first met in the academy? I never told you this, but that first time you spoke to me, I couldn't work out if you were playing me or not... Trying to get in my head you know." She says.
He chokes out a laugh. "I was, but somewhere along... the way...You got into my heart instead." He stutters with a laugh.
She smiles at him. "That's because I am charming as fuck." She laughs, causing him to do the same between choked breaths.
FLASHBACK... The Academy 6 years ago
"Alright, give it up for cadet Bishop! That's a new course record! Beating the previous time set earlier in this class intake by Mr. Moore!" Instructor Green yells enthusiastically, the group all clap as Maya smirks, sticking a hand up in recognition.
"Nice work olympian..." A man next to her laughs with a nudge to her shoulder.
She nods with a smile back. "Thanks." She says simply.
"Don't get too comfortable though... I'm comin' for ya. Good to know there is genuine competition in this group." He chuckles.
"Oh, that right?" Maya laughs.
"It is." The man smiles comfortably. "Leo Moore." He sticks his hand out.
Maya takes it with a smile. "Maya Bishop." She returns.
He laughs. "Oh I know who you are...Olympian." He smirks in a way that is friendly and open, rather than intimidating. "I'll see you around..." He says before turning and walking away.
"You will... I'll be the one in front of you." Maya calls after him with a grin heading back the same way.
Leo doesn't stop or turn, just offering a loud laugh in response.
Whilst she didn't know it at the time, that was the day Maya Bishop met her very best friend in the world, their competition and rivalry through the academy bonded them in a way neither expected.
