You woke with a start before rubbing your eyes, realizing that you hadn't been mending someone's severed arm.
You leaned on your headboard and glanced at Maki, then noticed the book you kept about flowers on your nightstand open near her hand. A small smile spread across your face and you leaned on her, your head on her shoulder and your arm draped over her.
She groaned and opened her eyes. "I swear, if it's any earlier than 8:00..."
Maki turned over to face you and you grinned at her. "Good morning."
She stared at you, at your unruly hair and your bare face and your pyjamas that weren't pyjamas but old clothes. "It is too early in the morning for you to be this chipper."
"Only because you're here, Maki."
"Yeah yeah." She sat up and stretched before slipping out of bed and going to the duffel bag in the corner.
You watched her fish out a sweater and shorts and tilted your head. "What are you doing?" you asked when she turned to you.
"I'm going for a run."
"It's 8:00 in the morning..."
"Yeah. That's when I run."
You gave her an incredulous look, as if disgusted by the very concept of running that early in the morning — or at all.
"Please, you can carry like 100lbs of flower pots," Maki said.
"But that's different! That's not running!"
"You don't have to come."
"I'm gonna be lonely here though!"
"Don't you have friends in this town?"
"But Nanako and Mimiko are out of town with Suguru and Tsumiki's mom said she was visiting someone this weekend."
Maki recognized the names from your extensive stories, the way they quickly and comfortably formed on your fingers. She sighed and picked up her phone from the nightstand.
She brought it to her ear and you stared at her lips, trying to read them as they moved, but she turned away.
After a while, she stuffed her phone in her pocket. "Toge is coming over."
You lit up. "Really?"
"Yeah. He lives closest. He'll be five minutes. I'll stay until then."

"When a hydrocarbon comes in contact with oxygen, what reaction occurs?"
"Combustion." Maki glanced at the door to the flower shop as the bell chimed, the door opening and Toge walking through. "Toge's here."
You grinned.
He waved.
And Maki tried her best to not set herself on fire. "I'll go now," she said, zipping up her jacket.
