Fujin slowly regained consciousness, hanging from the ceiling, his arms bound by shackles. He tugged at them, trying to free himself, but to no avail. As he looked around, he saw Nightwolf and Shang Tsung, each man shackled to pillars on either side of him. Both were still unconscious.
"Nightwolf! Shang Tsung!" Fujin called out, but neither man stirred. He repeated their names, louder this time. Eventually, both began to open their eyes. Nightwolf was the first to speak, his voice groggy as he asked, "Where are we?"
Shang Tsung scanned the room, his gaze landing on something all too familiar. "Shinnok's Bone Temple," he answered.
"Wait, where's Jaune?" The native asked.
"Oh, hey guys! Up here" Jaune's voice called from above. All three of them looked up to see Jaune who was chained upside down on the ceiling. "Why're you guys upside down?""Jaune, you're the one who's upside down." Nightwolf replied.
"Ah, so that's why my head feels heavy." Jaune said, as he turned. "Hey, is that Shinnok?"
The gruesome sight of Shinnok's head still hung upon the wall by skeletal hands, with red sparks of electricity occasionally crackling from his decapitated head, filled Fujin with dread. The former ruler of the Netherrealm was still tormented by the agony Raiden had inflicted upon him.
"Huh, so that's what happened to him after we defeated him." Jaune commented. He could still recall how he and Cassie fought against Shinnok to save the Jinsei. After his defeat, Raiden said he would deal with Shinnok himself, and left him and Cassie in the dark.
A voice echoed from the shadows behind Fujin. "Raiden's violence against our Lord will not go unavenged, Fujin," came the chilling words of the revenant Sindel. She remained hidden, her presence looming just beyond Fujin's sight. "Prepare to pay for your brother's sins."
"Oh......great......" Jaune muttered in exasperation. ".......it's you."
Sindel stepped into view, approaching Shang Tsung with an air of menace. "Sindel... you look well. Death becomes you," Shang Tsung remarked with a smirk. Though she returned the gesture with a sly smile, there was no amusement in her eyes.
"Always the charmer, Shang Tsung. I will enjoy feeding Lord Shinnok your soul." She touched his face gently.
"Is that what this is about?" Jaune called out from the ceiling. "Shinnok's already done for. I saw to that. Even if you manage to revive him somehow, all it takes is another decapitation."
Sindel turned to look up at Jaune. "Your victory over Shinnok was nothing but a mere shred of luck. Once we revive Shinnok and after Kronika achieves her golden balance, we will ensure your eternal suffering."
"You know that he's immortal right?" Jaune retorted.
"Jaune, please, that's enough." Fujin advised, fearing that Jaune would kill himself because of his remarks.
"Jaune Arc," Sindel said as she approached Jaune. The chains that bound Jaune onto the ceiling extended as he was lowered down until his face was right before the revenant banshee empress.
"I remember you," The empress said in a rather sultry manner. "As the one that Quan Chi tried so hard to get on his side, to become one of us. I will enjoy turning you into a revenant."
Sindel then turned her attention to Nightwolf, who had already begun subtly conjuring a spirit knife to free himself from his restraints.
"But you, Nightwolf," she sneered, "you get the privilege of suffering most." She grabbed his throat, though not enough to choke him. "Only the best will do for the man who killed me."
