"Yeah, you're breakin' my heart, baby
You make a mess of me"
Maggie managed to think quickly enough to throw herself to the ground behind a concrete pillar, dodging the onslaught of arrows. Without a second thought, she yanked Negan's arm, pulling him down beside her. They rolled across the ground until Maggie ended up on top of him.
She wasn't even sure why her first instinct had been to save his skin, but she did it anyway. Maggie felt Negan's hands on her waist, gripping her on both sides. Before she could open her mouth to reprimand him, she looked at him and realized his movement was unconscious—Negan was too busy cursing at the Reapers.
"Damn it! You bastards!" Negan shouted, his grip tightening around Maggie's waist, causing her to gasp. The arrows kept coming, forcing Maggie to duck even lower to stay hidden. She could feel Negan's breath close to her face. "You okay?"
"Mhm." Maggie pushed away thoughts of Negan's large hands on her waist and scanned the area for an opening. Not far from them, she spotted an entrance to one of Meridian's buildings. "We need to get out of here."
Negan agreed, pulling his hands away from Maggie and rolling to the side to get out from under her. At another time, he might have lingered longer. Maggie ducked and ran through the chaos of the dead and fireworks in the courtyard, with the older man right behind her.
The pair entered the building silently, sticking close to the walls. Negan followed Maggie, who knew the path well. She needed to find a place to hide, and she knew exactly where to go.
Maggie glanced back when she heard a noise in the side hallway. She didn't need to say anything; Negan understood her look and raised his crowbar to eye level. They turned the corner slowly and relaxed when they saw Elijah at the end of the corridor. They rushed to him.
"There's one behind me," Elijah whispered, stumbling to the side. Negan caught him before he hit the ground.
"Let's take care of that wound," Maggie guided them to some nearby rooms, which turned out to be the community's infirmary. The room was dark, but Maggie knew it by heart. She went straight to the cabinets in the corner, searching for bandages and first aid kits. "Over here," she called them to the other side of the infirmary, where Maggie knew there was a hidden wall.
The small group entered the concealed cubicle, and Negan closed the passage behind them. He leaned against the wall near the entrance, standing guard in case anything happened. Maggie handed the kit to Elijah to patch himself up. She moved to stand beside Negan, peeking through the crack in the wall. She could feel Negan's eyes on her.
"So... what now?" His raspy, tired voice was crystal clear in her ears.
"We wait until dawn and take them down one by one," Maggie replied without looking at him. Suddenly, the conversation from the previous day replayed in her mind, and the resentment bubbled up again.
"Or we just grab the food and leave," Negan suggested, catching her attention. She turned to look at him.
"And how do you plan on leaving here with your arms full?" To Maggie, getting half of something was no longer an option; she wouldn't settle for half of anything anymore.
"Just getting out of here would be a relief," he whispered, his gaze hard and direct. But he didn't hold it for long, turning away to look outside, either searching for something or avoiding her eyes. "Unless we're not just here for the food," he hinted, his voice even lower, so low that only she could probably hear it.
