The day after the family reunion, Richard was still feeling the sting of disappointment. Sarah had mentioned that she had a crush on a boy from her school, and it had shattered his hopes of ever being more than just friends. He had spent the entire day moping around the house, ignoring Amy's attempts to cheer him up.
Ethan, sensing Richard's distress, decided to intervene. "Hey man, what's wrong?" he asked, sitting down beside Richard.
Richard sighed. "It's Sarah," he confessed. "She has a crush on this guy from her school, and I'm totally out of the running."
Ethan tried to offer words of encouragement. "Don't worry, man. There are plenty of other girls out there."
But Richard wasn't convinced. He was convinced that Sarah was the one for him.
Determined to prove himself, Richard decided to follow the boy Sarah had a crush on. The boy was a jerk he knew. It was his old friend, Jake. But he wasn't sure if it was him. He approaches Sarah, who was on the sofa watching her favourite show. He asked about her school days. Sarah was rather interested in watching the romantic scene on the television than to bother to reply him.
Richard was more broken. He ran out desperately. Amy flinched at the noise of the door crashing to the wall. She jumped up from her bed in the midst of a conversation with Emily to see who it was. Amy wasn't surprised as it wasn't the first time Richard did that but there was something fishy. Why was he in a hurry now? She wanted to follow him to know where he was up to but was interrupted by Emily.
Richard met up with his best friend, Ethan. He explained the situation and asked if Ethan knew anything about Jake.
"Jake? Yeah, I know him," Ethan replied. "He goes to that new school on the outskirts of town."
Richard's heart sank. He had been hoping that Jake was someone he knew, someone he could easily confront. But if Jake was from a different school, it would be much harder to expose him.
Ethan continued, "He's usually hanging out at the local sports complex on Wednesdays. You might catch him there."
Richard's eyes lit up. That was his chance. He thanked Ethan and headed straight for the sports complex.
As he approached the complex, he heard a familiar voice. It was Jake, bragging to his friends about how easy it was to get girls to fall for him. Richard's blood boiled. This was the perfect opportunity to show Sarah his true colors.
Richard stepped out from behind a tree and confronted Jake. "Hey, Jake," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "I heard you're quite the ladies' man."
Jake turned around, his face contorted into a sneer. "What's it to you?" he replied.
Richard decided to take a more direct approach. "I'm here to tell Sarah the truth about you," he said. "She deserves to know what kind of person you really are."
Jake's eyes narrowed. "And what exactly are you going to tell her?" he demanded.
Richard didn't hesitate. He recounted Jake's boastful comments to his friends, emphasizing his arrogant and disrespectful attitude. Jake's face turned bright red with embarrassment. Jake fumed. A fight ensued between the two boys. Jake lunged at him. The boys grappled and exchanged blows.
Just as it seemed like Jake was gaining the upper hand, Richard managed to break free and land a powerful punch. Jake stumbled backward, his face contorted in pain. Richard seized the opportunity and delivered a series of blows, knocking Jake to the ground. As Richard was to stomp on Jake, Ethan grabbed Richard's arm.
Stop," Ethan said firmly. "This isn't going to solve anything."
Richard paused, his anger momentarily subsiding. He looked down at Jake, who was slowly regaining consciousness. He realized that he had gone too far, that he had allowed his anger to cloud his judgment.
With a sigh, Richard turned away and walked away, Ethan following closely behind. As they left the playground, Jake muttered something about revenge, his words lost in the wind.
Back home, Richard couldn't shake the feeling of guilt. He knew that he had acted impulsively, and he was worried about the consequences of his actions. He went straight to his room and collapsed on his bed.
Sarah called him a few minutes later. "I'm so sorry about earlier," she said. "I was so caught up in the TV show that I didn't even hear you."
Richard was taken aback. "It's okay," he replied. "I understand."
They chatted for a while, catching up on each other's lives. Sarah told Richard about her school projects, and Richard shared some funny stories about his family.
As they talked, Richard realized that he had developed feelings for Sarah. She was kind, intelligent, and had a great sense of humor. He had always admired her from afar, but now he realized that he wanted to be more than just friends.
As they hung up, Richard couldn't help but smile. Despite the recent confrontation with Jake, things were starting to look up.
