Luke's character has always been really interesting to me. I love seeing his evolution from an impatient kid into a mature Jedi, and I think his arc through the Original Trilogy is so well done. I find myself gravitating toward fics centered around him with hopes of reading him in his prime more often because he's such a great character. I love seeing authors take the foundations built in the OT and building on them further whether that's showing how he navigates his journey as a Jedi, his traumas, or his struggle with the dark side.
Building off of that, I've always thought about how interesting it is to see how he'd navigate or approach relationships post-Return of the Jedi. The dynamic that he and Mara Jade have in Legends is one of my favorites in fiction. There's just something so intriguing about Jedi deciding to go against the Code and I like to imagine that there's a bit of a moral struggle there. It's really fun to read about and to write.
Something else that I also wanted to explore with this story is the dynamic between a Force sensitive and a non-Force sensitive. I think having a non-Jedi OC adds another layer to the complexities and potential difficulties of a relationship with a Jedi. Luke can feel and connect with her on a very deep level through the Force, but she's unable to experience the same, creating a layer of disconnect. I really like the idea of this being a potential struggle and a way to continue building these characters as they have to learn how to navigate each other.
I started writing this way back in high school, but it didn't capture these themes well. The main character was insufferable, the plot was nonexistent, and it wasn't as complex as I wanted it to be at all. I've taken a very long hiatus, graduated university, and made the decision to come back to this fic and rewrite it entirely the way that I feel it should be.
Thank you so much for sticking around to read this, and I hope you enjoy the new Stay With Me.
