The alarm buzzed at 5:00 AM, slicing through the silence of the darkened bedroom. Xavier groaned, his face buried in the pillow, but he instinctively reached out a hand to silence the sound. His eyes blinked open in the dim light, the faint blue glow of the clock casting a soft haze across the room. Beside him, Grace stirred but remained asleep. Xavier leaned over, planting a gentle kiss on her forehead before quietly slipping out of bed.

He moved silently through the dark, his steps soft as he made his way to the kitchen, flipping on the dim lights. The kettle filled with a low hum as water began to boil, his mind already turning toward the day ahead. He prepared a simple breakfast—two slices of toast and an egg, his eyes flicking to the clock as he worked. On the counter, his neatly folded Nexus lab coat waited, a reminder of the responsibility ahead.

The scent of freshly brewed coffee drifted through the cool morning air, its rich aroma filling the kitchen as he poured a cup and stepped out onto the small balcony. The city lay still, the faint glow of streetlights flickering in the distance. Xavier sipped the coffee slowly, savoring the warmth as the first blush of dawn began to touch the horizon.

When he returned to the bedroom, Grace was sitting up in bed, her hair tousled, a sleepy smile tugging at her lips. “You’re up early, as always,” she teased, her voice thick with sleep.

“Someone’s got to save the world,” Xavier grinned, leaning down to kiss her again. Her lips were soft and warm, the faint taste of peppermint tea lingering from the night before. He lingered a moment longer than necessary, reluctant to pull away.

Grace laughed softly, nudging him playfully. “Go on, before you’re late.”

He chuckled as he grabbed his coat and bag. “See you tonight,” he called over his shoulder, then, almost as an afterthought, added, “Love you.”

“Love you too,” she called back, her voice trailing behind him as the front door clicked shut.

The sun was barely a hint of gold over the skyline when Xavier arrived at the Nexus biotech facility. He passed through the security gates with a quick nod to the guard, making his way down the sleek, modern corridors. His footsteps echoed in the stillness of the early morning. The lab was quiet, just the way he liked it—the hum of equipment and the murmur of air conditioning the only sounds.

His desk was cluttered with research papers and digital displays—diagrams of complex molecular structures and charts tracking experimental results. He was knee-deep in a project on regenerative medicine, experimenting with ways to accelerate tissue repair. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was the kind of work that could change lives, and Xavier thrived on that promise.

A knock on the doorframe pulled him from his thoughts. He glanced up to see Malcolm leaning against the doorway, holding two steaming cups of coffee. “You’re here early. Again.”

Xavier shrugged, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “You know me. Can’t sleep when there’s work to be done.”

Malcolm handed him a cup and took a seat on the edge of the desk. “You say that like you ever sleep at all. What’s the latest?”

“Same as yesterday—slow progress,” Xavier replied, taking a sip of the scalding coffee. He rubbed his eyes, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. “But I’ve got a few ideas to test today. If they work, it could mean a breakthrough.”

Malcolm raised an eyebrow. “Here’s hoping. Just don’t forget to take a break every once in a while, alright?”

Xavier chuckled softly, but his mind was already drifting back to the data on his screen. “Yeah, yeah. I’ll take a break when we cure aging.”
