Narrators POV

As dawn approached, an un easy silence loomed over the kingdom. The usual sweet smell of fresh dough, was no stranger on any other Thursday morning, but not today. The harmony of the whistling Cockatiel was replaced by the dull breeze.

The village just outside the royal castle would usually be in full swing as the providers of the king. It was their job to grow crops and hunt meat to be delivered to the royal family.

The dim scenes unfolding beyond the palace walls were a complete contrast to the occurrence inside. At the very top of the west wing was a large rectangular window, this window had what was arguably the most beautiful view in the whole castle. Overlooking the continuous dark forest and more importantly the sun set. At the right time of year the sky would be a canvas of purples and oranges.

What was even more beautiful than this was inside that window for once, truly heart warming. However, as the kingdom was learning, this beauty poses a serious threat to life as everyone knows it. The two boys so similar yet undoubtably different, lay entwined on the large bed. Two innocent souls bound together completely content.

The dark haired boy was on his back, with the fair haired boys head pressed lightly to his chest. One left hand loosely connected with a right, hushed breaths almost synchronised. Not even heavens best angels could sculpt such a perfect moment.

But as we all know, nothing perfect can last forever.

Joeys POV

*knocking on door*

'Joey... Are you up? I have great news Joey open the door'

I woke up to banging on the door and heard my fathers excited voice. Shit.

'Daniel...Daniel quick get up, you need to hide'

'Joey are you talking to someone?'

'No just a sec'

I pushed Daniel off the bed and he woke as he hit the hard wooden floor.

'Ow!'

'Joey, who is that?'

Daniel realised who was outside and swiftly shuffled under the bed. I rushed to the door and taking a breath I unlocked it.

'It was me I stubbed my toe on the bed, anyway what's your great news?'

'Ah yes! I've done it my boy, I know I've found the perfect girl this time, you're going to adore her.'

His smile was genuine, he really was excited about this, I did tell him I'd marry the next girl after all.

'That's great dad-'

'Who's shirt is that?'

Oh shit Daniels shirt is still on the floor.

'It's mine of course, who else's would it be?'

I forced a laugh in order to convince him, as he walked over to the shirt and picked it up.

'This filthy thing? You shouldn't be wearing this kind of thing Joey, look at it. Who do you really think should be wearing this?'

I know he wants me to say cockroaches, but Daniel is listening.

'Dad it's just a shirt'

'I said who should be wearing this Joey?

'does it really-'

'JOEY'

'NO. I won't treat people like you do dad, the people who work for us in our house are just as important as we are. You can call them what you want and i will call them what I want. All that really matters right now is that I go and meet this girl right?'

He stared at me with a mixture of bewilderment and anger pasted on his face.

'Fine...just get ready and put something nice on.'

'Ok'

'But I'm taking this filthy thin with me'

He waved Daniels shirt in front of me and exited the room closing the door behind him. I walked towards the bed and lay stomach down on the floor.

'I suppose that could've gone worse'

Daniel mirrored the smile I had on my face and then slowly began to laugh, the sound was contagious it really was. I couldn't help but roll onto my back and laugh with him.

'Thank you Joey'

'For what?'

He looked away from me and faced the bottom of the mattress, staring at it as if to avoid eye contact.

'For sticking up for me'

'Oh that'

'I know it doesn't seem like much but...no one has ever done something like that for me before'

I honestly didn't know what to say. How could he have gone his whole life without someone speaking up for him. I don't care if I'm a prince and he's not, that doesn't mean he should by treated like trash. I'm not going to let it happen anymore, I don't care if I lose everything, I'm going to show him true friendship.

'Dan-'

'Joey come on she's here'

My dads voice rippled through the hallways, I had got use to him screaming from half way across the castle, but that didn't make it any less annoying.

Daniel shuffled out from under the bed and I realised that he didn't have a shirt to put on.

'Hold on I'll get you something to put on.'

'You don't have to'

I ignored his protests pulling my favourite jumper out of my draws and tossing it to him.

'Wow'

'What?'

'Nothing it's just...this is really soft.'

'I know that's why it's my favourite'

'What? And you want me to wear it'

'No, I want you to come and dress me.'

His facial expression seemed to say that he was taking me seriously, so I quickly changed my tone.

'Of course you can wear it Daniel.'

It was slightly to big for him, so the sleeves hung over his hands and the neckline showed a small amount of his chest.

'I have to bath and get changed, but I'll see you at dinner I guess, just don't spill it on me this time yeah?'

He smiled and walked towards the door, checking no one was around he snuck down the hall. Once he was gone I stared at the bed where we had been and realised how well I slept with him beside me. Maybe having a friend will be good for me, I've never had a friend before so I guess this is what friendship feels like.
