Narrators POV

As the two boys walked through the large wooden gates at the end of the courtyard there was a sense of freedom in he air. They knew that once they were passed the village they could be themselves, they could link hands and talk about nonsense while they stared lovingly at each other.

People bowed to Joey as they passed him some even offered him gifts, bread, fruit, those sorts of things. He simply turned them down with a smile that said 'no Thank you' and they went on their way. It hurt Joey to know that they probably didn't have much, yet they would still give it to him, probably out of fear. Most of the villagers think of Joey how they think of the King, an evil brut. 'If only they knew the truth' he thought.

Daniel looked over at Joey and noticed that he didn't quite seem himself, but he couldn't tell if he looked sad or nervous. He subtly raised his Han and poked at Joeys hip catching his attention.

'What's up?'

His voice was laced with worry, which Joey picked up on immediately.

'Nothing, I'm great'

'Wow, that was convincing'

'Don't get sassy with me boy, I'll be fine once we are away from all these people don't worry.'

Daniel left the subject alone and turned his attention to the people around them. He looked at how they were all dressed in dirty old clothes, hardly any of them even had shoes on. It was all too familiar. Just a short time ago that was him, but now here he is with the Prince, 'what does Joey even see in me?' He didn't want to think about it but it was something that constantly bothered him, the thought was always there in he back of his mind and it drove him crazy.

As he continued to look around he noticed a little girl sitting by herself, she was crying silently, completely unnoticed by everyone.

She had long dark her and from what he could tell, bright blue watery eyes. Her clothes were thin and torn and her skin was pale and unwashed.

He disappeared from Joeys side into the crowed and quickly walked over to her. Without hesitation he sat beside her and rested his hand on her boney shoulder, he spoke as sweetly and calmly as he could, which for him wasn't that difficult.

'Hey, I'm Daniel, are you lost?'

The young girl, probably about six or seven, lifted her head and observed the man sitting before her. After a short pause she nodded her head in response to the question. Daniels heart dropped and he looked around for someone who seemed to shave lost a child.

'Okay well what happened?'

She wiped her eyes with her dirty torn sleeve and took in a deep breath.

'I-I was walking with my nan and t-this man grabbed my arm and pulled me away...he I told me not to scream, but I got a way and a ran...a-and I hid here, but I can't see my nan anywhere. Please  don't let him take me. '

She cried louder and Daniel choked back his tears, he didn't want to make her more scared by crying.

'No one is going to take you okay? We're going to-'
