Tanvi

"Okay, seriously, how did you find this place?" I asked, glancing around the garden.

We skipped last period.

Anaya smiled mysteriously, plucking a blade of grass and twirling it between her fingers.

"That's a secret" she said playfully.

"Come on! You can't just leave me hanging like that" I insisted.

Anaya shrugged, her smile widening. "Some things are better left undiscovered, don't you think? It's nice to have a little mystery."

Mystery. I smiled back, but inside, my mind was spiraling.

What if Anaya finds out I'm bisexual? Suddenly I started feeling anxious.

We'd just met, I don't want this to change anything between us.

What if she thinks it's weird? What if she sees me differently?

Even though I’m not into her. I can't make the same mistake again. The last thing I wanted was to ruin a potential friendship over something so personal. I’d already lost Palak over this. I couldn’t go through that again.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. I smiled and focused back on Anaya. For now, let's just enjoy this.

I leaned back on my hands, "I guess you're right. This place is amazing. I thought college would be nothing but studies and chaos."

"Exactly! It's nice to escape for a bit," she replied, "Especially with everything being so new. Sometimes I just need to breathe."

I sighed, knowing it all too well. "I feel that. These two weeks have been intense. I'm still trying to find my way around and figure out classes." Among other things.

"Same here" she admitted.

We both lay down on the grass and looked at the clouds passing by. It was comfortable silence. The rare kind.

I closed my eyes and let the calmness take over me.

------
"Tanvi, that's a pretty name"

"Really? You think so?" I replied, feeling a flutter of happiness.

"Yeah, it's lovely"

"I was thinking... I'd love to visit you one day. Mumbai sounds amazing, especially the beach" I said, my heart racing at the thought.

"Really? You'd want to come here?" There was hesitation in her voice but I ignored it.

"Absolutely! We could spend the day at the beach, make sandcastles, and just relax"

"That does sound nice"

"I can't wait!"
-------

"Hey, wake up!" Someone shook my shoulders.

I rubbed my eyes, "What?"

"Geez, you really knocked out there. I almost thought you were planning to sleep through the rest of the semester" Anaya laughed.

"Yeah, right. I’m sure my grades would love that." I muttered, sitting up and stretching.

I don't even know when I fell asleep.

"Let's go, last class ended 15 minutes ago"

I blinked, still half-dazed. "Why didn't you wake me up then?"

"You looked like this is first time you've slept in days," she shrugged. "So, I let you sleep."

She wasn’t wrong. I hadn’t really slept in days.

"What were you dreaming about?"

I furrowed my brows in confusion.

"You were mumbling something, I couldn't figure it out. But you had a smile on your face, so I guess it was something good?"

I felt the color drain from my face. My throat tightened. I was dreaming about her. I am glad Anaya didn't hear anything.

"It was nothing," I brushed it off quickly, standing up. "Let’s go"

I offered her my hand and she took it without hesitation.

She looked at me like she wanted to say something but wasn’t sure how. I just hoped she wouldn't push for details.
