Eryx stirred awake, alarm flashing across his features as he shot up. “What is it?” he asked, his eyes wide with concern.

“Look!” Lydia exclaimed, stepping out of the cave and into the pristine snow. She spun around, arms wide, a warm smile lighting up her face. “It snows!”

Eryx followed her, his breath caught in his throat as he stepped outside. The world before them was transformed, blanketed in a thick layer of shimmering snow. Shock registered on his face; it wasn’t winter when they had left the academy. “It’s the cave,” he said, regaining his composure. “I think it’s a portal. Lydia, you shouldn’t be.. ”

But Lydia, already lost in the joy of the moment, scooped up a handful of snow and shaped it into a snowball. With a gleeful laugh, she launched it at him, hitting him squarely in the chest. “What? Let’s enjoy this moment! Don’t you love the snow?”

Eryx's instincts kicked in, his eyes scanning the surroundings, which now resembled the woods near their academy but transformed into a winter wonderland. “If I’m not mistaken,” he said cautiously, “we are now in the Snow Kingdom.”

Lydia’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Snow Kingdom?!”

“Yes,” Eryx confirmed, his tone more serious. “They’re known to be friendly and peaceful, so I guess we’re alright for now.”

Lydia clapped her hands together, excitement bubbling within her. “This is amazing! We’re in a kingdom made of snow!let's explore!

Eryx couldn’t help but smile at her enthusiasm, though he remained wary. “Alright, but we need to stay alert. We don’t know what might be lurking in this place.”

As they ventured further into the snow-laden landscape, Lydia's laughter echoed through the trees, her delight infectious. Eryx watched her, heart swelling with warmth. Despite the danger surrounding them, this moment felt precious, a glimmer of joy amidst the chaos of their lives.

As they walked through the snowy woods, Lydia couldn’t help but steal glances at Eryx. His gaze remained focused on the road ahead, sharp and watchful as ever, but her thoughts wandered elsewhere.

She wondered if the bonding would be successful.will they be able to bound for eternity, immortal, sharing a connection that transcend time itself? If that were true, maybe she could finally face her fears, find her parents without worrying about her mortality. The thought gave her an odd sense of courage.

Suddenly, Eryx glanced back at her, catching her mid-thought. His light brown eyes narrowed slightly in curiosity. “What are you thinking about, Lydia?” His voice was soft, but it held a knowing edge.

She blushed, quickly averting her gaze. “N-nothing,” she stammered, then pointed ahead in an attempt to change the subject. “Oh look, Eryx, there’s a small town just ahead.”

He turned to where she pointed, squinting as the outline of a town emerged in the distance. The rooftops were covered in thick snow, chimneys puffing gentle streams of smoke into the cold air. “Yeah,” he said, narrowing his gaze. “I hope there’s a place for us to stay the night. We can’t risk going back to the cave and ending up somewhere else. We got lucky this time.”

Lydia nodded in agreement, her heart still fluttering from their brief exchange. As they neared the town, the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden hue over the snow-covered streets. The few people walking outside were all bundled up in long white fur coats and red winter hats, even the children. Lydia found it charming.

She approached one of the kids, who pointed them toward the town’s only inn.

“Thank you,” she said with a warm smile before turning back to Eryx, who had been watching her quietly. His gaze softened as he saw her cheerful expression.

There was something different about her now, something more open and confident, like she had found a sense of comfort in herself. Eryx was amazed by the transformation. He had always admired her, but now, seeing her this way, he felt a deeper connection. She was lovely, warm, and full of life.

As they walked together toward the inn, he couldn’t help but think how much he wanted to keep that smile on her face forever. And if that meant standing by her side, protecting her, and being with her for as long as he lived, he would gladly do so.
