MARYAM SHEIKH

"Thats it," announced Fatima, slamming my textbook and taking it away from me. "You're literally rotting in here, Maryam."

"But its close to finals week," I wined, but I did admit what she said was true.

"Just look at this place," she said, walking around the room, pointing at the billion or so unwashed coffee mugs, post its on the wall (some chose the floor) and my piles of old guides and notebooks. Now that I think about it, even the hoodie I wore, smelled weird.

"Finals are still days away and what you need to do is get out here. God," Fatima wrinkled her nose,

"What is that smell?"

"Probably last Tuesday's dinner?" I shrugged.

Fatima glared at me and folded her arms. I knew it was the cue for me to get the broom and mop.

6 hours later

The whole day, we scrubbed and cleaned the dorm. I washed the dishes while Fatima went around the house, poking my clothes with a mop. We Door Dashed our lunch, chicken burritos and sprite, while binge watching netflix.

"I forgot," I said, looking at the clock. "I had to head to the mall, to get a few things."

"But we went last week," said Fatima, not taking eyes off from the TV.

"Uh...Dishsoap and uhh... Some more veggies...Yeah veggies," I stuttered. It was Fatima's birthday tomorrow night and I really wanted to make a special dinner for her, with all her favorite things. Amr had already ordered the cake and the balloons, and he and I would go over to her apartment tomorrow morning to decorate and cook. Its been weeks since the apartment was used since she stays with me most of the time.

"Fine, but I'm coming with you."

"You don't have to," I said trying to laugh it off. "Its just a few things."

"But I heard there's a sale going at one of the clothing store I was telling you about," she said, showing me some ads on her phone. "And I physically cannot miss a clothing sale."

There's was no stopping her now.

We reached the mall in an hour and it was really, really crowded. Apparently, there was a band playing and people had gathered to watch them as top securities paraded the area.

"Why don't you check them out while I go get everything? I spoke loudly over the blasting music, hoping she would say yes.

"Hey you guys," someone whistled. We turned around to see Amr smiling wide and Zaid standing next to him, looking bored. We couldn't recognize him at first at all.

He was wearing an oversized hoodie with baggy jeans and a baseball cap. He covered his face with a white mask, which he took off when he saw us. But he looked away as he saw me and pretended to look at the crowd.
