Kurt had enjoyed the kiss. He couldn't say otherwise. However, it let him more confused than anything. He gently broke the kiss but kept holding Blaine's forearm:
"You have no right to toy with my feelings like this!"
Blaine looked down and nodded. The bastard had the courage to confess! Blaine fixed his hazel eyes on Kurt:
"Kurt... I... I'm sorry."
"That's all you have to say?"
Blaine seemed to want to say something, but he only bit his lip and looked down again. Kurt couldn't believe his eyes, the nerve of this guy. He wouldn't even keep eye contact, all he wanted were Kurt's lips.
"Blaine, you know how I feel about you. You said you wanted to be my friend. I couldn't help but let my hopes get high, I didn't want to. I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't have, but I'm only human. I'm only human."
"I know. I'm so sorry..."
Blaine tried to reach for his hand, but Kurt pulled away.
"I'm sorry too, but I need to protect myself, I need to protect my feelings."
Blaine looked on the verge of tears:
"I don't want to lose you."
Kurt didn't either. But how could he go on like that? He couldn't just kiss Blaine — for the second time — and pretend nothing happened, like it didn't move him. Blaine focused his best puppy dog's eyes on him. Kurt just wanted to grab that face and kiss him senseless. But he couldn't and that was the point.
"Blaine, we barely know each other. Have we become toxic?"
"Yet, you love me."
"How dare you? Only because you know, don't make it less mine. You don't reciprocate the feeling; you don't own me. Even if you did, I'm not yours for the take like Sam. You are so used to owning someone that you forgot how to be in a real relationship with another human being?"
"My relationship with Sam is real."
Kurt pinched the bridge of his nose:
"Has the world turned upside down? Is it some kind of modern days' slavery, where you can own a person, a robot, I don't know...?"
"I'm not good with relationships. I don't own Sam. He's my buddy. I bought him because I was feeling lonely. I wanted company, interaction... I knew I could never fall for him... Where I'm going with this? Kurt, I like you. I personally and genuinely like being around you. It feels like you fill a hole in my heart."
"You're saying all the words I wanted to hear from you, but in some kind of twisted order. I'm sorry, Blaine, I need time to think."
Hours later, Kurt found himself checking the helperbot.inc website. Older people used to tell stories about how it all began. From smartphones with their 'Siri's and devices like Alexa to the modern days Helperbots. Always with the constant of releasing newer versions and the obsolescence of their older models. Kurt liked to listen to those stories, he used to research life in the past. He'd read about ancient websites where you had to prove you were not a robot. When he told people about what he had learned from his research, it would make them laugh and grow even fonder of their helpers.
Kurt still found it all kind of creepy. Creating artificial intelligence, artificial life to be your best-friend, your lover, was still a concept Kurt's mind needed to adapt to. People creating people was something unusual for his mind. He must confess that meeting Sam had changed a few things. He'd never had imagined he could grow so attached and be so at ease with a bot.
And now the Love Device, a gadget designed with the single purpose of making Kurt's life a living Hell. Why hadn't Blaine device beep or why Kurt's had? They should come up with a way to make people fall in love at the same time and end all suffering. All that technology and people still had to tend to a broken heart. Maybe he should live as his times dictated — marry a robot and forget all about love. Or maybe he should do like people did in older centuries and give time to time. Stay away from Blaine to forget all about him. Accept a job across the sea and meet new people. Yeah, like he was good at it. Like he could forget the only guy who had made his device beep.
