I never think about the consequences amid action.

So, until we were a solid 10 minutes away, I started contemplating everything.

What if they're in cars behind us now?

What if they're just waiting for us to stop?

What'll happen if Vincent and Adrian find out?

I wasn't the only one overthinking.

Elise had been eerily quiet after our five minutes of pure happiness. Now? She had a solemn expression as she watched the road ahead of her.

"What's wrong?" I asked quietly.

"Hm?"

"You look worried," I replied, raising a brow. She sighed and took a left turn.

"I don't know... what if they find us again?" she asked, trying not to peel her eyes off the road, "The consequences are just going to keep getting worse." I nodded.

"You're right..." I trailed off, "They might find us again. But even so, we'll just escape again. It's no biggie." She stopped at a red light and turned to look at me.

"That's the thing: I don't want it to be 'we'. I don't want you to be a part of this. Nothing happened to me, but you? You got knocked out and your blood pressure's been raised up several times-"

"All things I had coming to me," I interrupted her, "we're not talking about this again. End of discussion." She sighed in exasperation but didn't say more as she started driving again.

After a long 15 minutes, we made it to an exit and passed by a Mcdonalds.

Yes! Food!

"I'm starvingg...can we stop there?" I whined. Elise rolled her eyes.

"Didn't you eat in prison?" she muttered sarcastically.

"That's nothing! You know I have an insatiable appetite," I groaned, my mouth watering at the big M. She mumbled angrily to herself but pulled into the driveway. I cheered out in celebration.

"We need to hurry. For all we know, they could be speeding after us right now," she warned, rolling down her window. She then suddenly fixed her face into a smile.

"Welcome to Mcdonald's, what can I get for you today?" The voice on the menu asked. Elise cleared her throat and replied, trying to level her voice to sound normal,

"Quarter pounder with cheese, large fries, and a coke."

"Okay, is that all for you?"

Elise turned to me and asked,

"What do you want?"

"10 piece chicken nuggets, large fries, and a coke," I replied, gleaming with happiness. She repeated it to the guy and then we were done. She pulled up to pay and I could sense her anxiousness as she tapped her nails anxiously on the wheel.

"What's wrong?" I asked her curiously. She looked at me and her eyes were slightly frantic.

"Are you aware that we are on the run from people who are very dangerous and resourceful? And that every second, they are closer to finding us?" she asked, running her hand down her face, "And we're literally stopping at a goddamn Mcdonalds, of all places!"

I groaned and rolled my eyes.

"You are exaggerating this so much. Nothings going to happen! We'll be fine!" I exclaimed. She opened her mouth to reply, but stopped when the employee approached the pay window. The lady asked for a sum of 20 something and that's when I realized that we had no money.
