The tension in the air was suffocating, thick like the cold metal walls of the prison. Jasper loomed over Peridot, her eyes glowing with barely restrained fury. Lapis stood frozen, watching the scene unfold through the shimmering force field, knowing that any misstep could be disastrous. She had seen Jasper's wrath before—seen it destroy and dismantle anything in its path. The idea of Peridot standing up to her felt like watching a fragile twig brace itself against a storm.
"Explain yourself!" Jasper roared, her fists clenched as she took a step closer to Peridot. The ground seemed to shake beneath her heavy footfalls, the sheer force of her presence reverberating through the room.
Peridot's hands trembled slightly, her tablet held out like a shield between her and Jasper. But despite her fear, there was a steely determination in her eyes, a resolve Lapis had never seen before. "I am the technician in charge of this facility. You're overstepping your bounds, Jasper."
"Overstepping?" Jasper's voice dripped with venom as she leaned down, her face mere inches from Peridot's. "You forget your place, Peridot. You're not some superior officer. You're just a glorified engineer. And I—" she jabbed her finger into Peridot's chest, causing her to stumble back "—am a warrior."
For a moment, it looked like Peridot might break under the pressure. Her small frame seemed to shrink in Jasper's shadow, and the fear in her eyes was palpable. But then, something shifted. Peridot's hands stopped trembling, and she stood a little straighter, her expression hardening.
"This prison is under my control," Peridot said, her voice firmer now. "And unless you want me to report your insubordination to the Diamond Authority, you will leave my protocols intact."
Jasper's eyes narrowed dangerously, her muscles tensing as though she was moments away from attacking. But she didn't. Instead, she let out a low, guttural growl, her teeth clenched in frustration. "You think you have the authority to threaten me?" she hissed.
Peridot didn't flinch. "I have the authority to ensure this prison operates as it should. And if you interfere with that again, I will have no choice but to escalate this to Homeworld."
The silence that followed was thick with suspense. Lapis could hardly breathe, her heart pounding as she waited for Jasper to retaliate. But to her surprise, the warrior only glared at Peridot for a long, tense moment before backing off. Jasper's fists remained clenched, but she didn't strike. Instead, she spat on the ground near Peridot's feet.
"This isn't over, Peridot," Jasper snarled, her voice low and threatening. "I don't care how smart you think you are. In the end, you're just another cog in the machine. And cogs can be replaced."
With that, Jasper stormed out of the room, her heavy boots echoing in the empty halls.
Peridot stood frozen in place, her grip on the tablet tight enough to leave her knuckles white. Lapis watched her, silently marveling at what had just happened. Peridot—who had always seemed so subservient, so bound by her loyalty to Homeworld—had just defied one of the most powerful warriors in their ranks. And she had done it to protect her protocols. Or maybe... to protect Lapis.
The silence stretched on until Lapis finally spoke, her voice soft. "That was... brave."
Peridot flinched, as if she had forgotten Lapis was even there. She turned to face the prisoner, her eyes still wide with shock. "Brave? No, that wasn't brave. That was... necessary."
Lapis tilted her head, watching Peridot carefully. "It didn't look like you were just following orders. You could have let her destroy me."
Peridot's eyes darted away, her fingers fidgeting nervously with the edge of her tablet. "You're a valuable asset. Destroying you would be inefficient."
Lapis raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a small smile. "Is that all I am? An asset?"
Peridot didn't answer right away. Instead, she turned back to her tablet, typing away with a mechanical precision that betrayed her growing discomfort. "I need to ensure the prison's systems are functioning properly," she muttered, her voice devoid of emotion. But Lapis could see through the facade. Peridot was rattled. And underneath that, there was something else. Something deeper.
"I don't think that's the whole truth," Lapis said softly, stepping closer to the force field. "You're not like Jasper. You're not like the others."
Peridot's hands froze over the tablet, her body tense. "I'm nothing like Jasper," she whispered, almost to herself.
Lapis' eyes softened. "You're not like Homeworld either. You care."
Peridot stiffened, her eyes narrowing behind her visor. "I have my duty, Lazuli. Don't mistake my actions for sentiment."
Lapis smiled gently, her voice full of understanding. "Maybe. But I see it in you. You're starting to question things, aren't you?"
For a long moment, Peridot didn't respond. She stood there, motionless, staring at her tablet as if searching for something in the data that could anchor her. But there was no answer there. Only silence.
