Chapter 3: Awakening
Hyannah awoke with a start, her heart racing as the remnants of the dreamscape faded like mist under the morning sun. She blinked against the brightness of her small room, the familiar surroundings feeling both comforting and surreal. The memory of Nix and the Phoenix lingered in her mind, vivid and enchanting, as if she had only just left them moments ago.
Sitting up in bed, she took a deep breath, trying to ground herself in reality. “What just happened?” she murmured to herself, still feeling the warmth of the dream wrapping around her like a cozy blanket. Thoughts of the Hall of Lost Dreams and the girl she had helped filled her mind, intertwining with the lessons Nix had taught her about facing shadows and embracing hope.
She could still hear Nix’s voice in her head, urging her to confront her fears and reminding her that she was not alone. A soft smile crept across her face as she recalled the way his dark cloak had billowed behind him, the calm confidence in his eyes making her feel safe amidst the chaos of the dreamscape. There was a strange connection between them, one she couldn’t quite put her finger on. It made her heart flutter in a way she had never experienced before.
“What was that feeling?” she wondered, brushing a hand through her hair. Was it admiration? Something deeper? She didn’t have time to dwell on it now.
Hyannah swung her legs over the side of the bed, her bare feet meeting the cool floor. She glanced at the clock; she was running late for school. With a rush of adrenaline, she quickly got dressed, slipping into her uniform—an old yet well-kept shirt and skirt that were her only set for public school.
As she moved through her morning routine, thoughts of her dream filled her mind. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she needed to see Nix again. The weight of the shadows she had faced felt lighter somehow, but she knew there were many more challenges awaiting her, and she wanted to be ready for them.
After hastily finishing breakfast—just a slice of bread and a glass of water—she grabbed her backpack and rushed out the door. The streets leading to her school were bustling with life, but Hyannah felt a world apart from the chaos.
The public school was a typical building, worn and faded but filled with the sounds of laughter, chatter, and the occasional shout of excitement. Hyannah slipped into her classroom and settled into her seat, trying to focus on the lesson. But her mind kept drifting back to her dream and the journey she was now part of.
She barely heard her teacher explaining the lesson on fractions, her thoughts wandering to the next time she would see Nix. “What if I can’t go back?” she worried. “What if I’ve already forgotten how to enter the dreamscape?”
The bell rang, jolting her from her thoughts. As her classmates filed out, she gathered her things slowly, trying to calm the fluttering anxiety in her chest.
Throughout the day, she completed her assignments and participated in discussions, but she felt a nagging emptiness inside her. She missed the feeling of purpose she had experienced in the dreamscape, the thrill of facing fears and helping others.
When school finally ended, she walked home, her mind racing with ideas. She had chores to do, but all she could think about was how to prepare for her next dream. “What can I do to ensure I see Nix again?” she pondered as she entered her small house.
The evening unfolded like any other. She helped her mother with dinner, washed the dishes, and tidied up the house. Yet, her heart wasn’t in it. She was eager for nightfall, for the chance to return to the dreamscape and continue her journey.
After finishing her chores, Hyannah retreated to her small room. She closed the curtains, dimming the light, and sat on her bed, her heart pounding in anticipation. “What do I need to do to dream?” she thought, remembering the times she had lucid dreamed before. She needed to be focused, to have a clear intention.
She closed her eyes and took deep breaths, calming her mind. “I will return to the dreamscape. I will find Nix again. I will continue our journey.”
As she repeated her mantra, she envisioned the dreamscape—its swirling colors, the warmth of the Phoenix, and the steady presence of Nix. With each breath, she felt herself sinking deeper into relaxation, surrendering to the pull of sleep.
Minutes passed, and just as she felt herself drifting away, she whispered one last time, “Nix, I’m coming back.”

She awoke once more, but this time, the surroundings were different. She stood in a vibrant meadow, wildflowers swaying gently in the breeze. The sky above was a brilliant blue, the sun shining down with a warmth that filled her with energy.
“I’m here!” she called out, her voice echoing through the landscape.
Suddenly, the air shimmered, and Nix appeared before her, his dark cloak contrasting beautifully against the bright colors of the meadow. The Phoenix soared overhead, its feathers glinting in the sunlight.
“You’ve returned,” Nix said, his smile warm and welcoming.
Hyannah rushed toward him, excitement bubbling within her. “I missed you! I didn’t want to lose what we had. I want to continue our journey.”
Nix nodded, his expression serious but kind. “You’ve done well to find your way back. The dreamscape is vast, and each journey teaches us something new. Are you ready to face more shadows?”
She took a deep breath, feeling the weight of determination settle in her chest. “Yes. I’m ready.”
“Then let’s begin,” he said, extending his hand toward her.
Hyannah grasped it firmly, feeling a rush of energy flow between them. Together, they stepped forward into the shimmering light, the colors around them swirling and shifting as they ventured deeper into the dreamscape, ready to confront whatever awaited them.
With her heart full of hope and courage, Hyannah knew that this was just the beginning of her adventure. Together with Nix, she would face the shadows, embrace the light, and continue to protect the dreams of those who had lost their way.
