The days after your conversation with Hanni felt like a blur, but not in the usual sense. Instead of being swept away by the daily rush of classes, clubs, and social events, you found yourself feeling strangely detached. It was as if your mind was trying to solve a puzzle, and no matter how hard you tried to focus on anything else, one piece refused to fit-Hanni.
You had never questioned your friendship with Hanni before; it was something you had taken for granted, like breathing. Hanni was your anchor, the person who had always been there through every high and low, and you had never imagined it could be anything more than that. But now, after their heart-to-heart, the conversation kept replaying in your head. Hanni's words echoed in the quiet moments, and the look in her eyes lingered like an unsolved mystery.
Nayeon, meanwhile, had been texting you regularly, inviting you to events or just to hang out. You didn't mind spending time with her, but you felt like you were drifting through the moments with her, as if you were going through the motions rather than being truly present. It was something you had only recently started to notice, and it unsettled you.
One afternoon, Nayeon invited you to join her at a local café. It was one of those cozy places with mismatched furniture, fairy lights strung up along the walls, and a soft hum of indie music playing in the background. You thought it was the perfect spot for an afternoon chat-normally, you would've enjoyed the ambiance. But as you sat across from Nayeon, listening to her talk about a recent discovered songs, your mind wandered again.
"You okay?" Nayeon's voice brought you back to the moment, her expression concerned. "You've seemed kind of distracted lately."
Your eyes flicked up to meet hers, and you realized you hadn't been able to mask your thoughts as well as you'd hoped. "Yeah, I'm fine," you said, trying to sound reassuring. "Just have a lot on my mind, I guess."
"Anything you want to talk about?" Nayeon asked, her tone gentle. "I'm here to listen."
You appreciated the offer, but you weren't sure how to explain what was bothering you-especially since you were not entirely sure yourself. How could you tell Nayeon that you had been questioning things you had never questioned before? That spending time with her, no matter how nice she was, just didn't make you feel the way you thought it should?
"Thanks, but I'm okay," you replied with a small smile. "Just one of those days."
Nayeon nodded, accepting your response, but you could tell she was unconvinced. The two of you continued chatting about lighter topics, but the longer they talked, the more you found yourself comparing the feeling of being with Nayeon to being with Hanni. With Nayeon, there was a sort of pressure-subtle, but there nonetheless. It was like you had to keep up a certain image or say the right things, even if she never explicitly made you feel that way. With Hanni, however, there was no pretense. You don't need to worry about being "on" or saying something funny. You and Hanni could sit in comfortable silence, and it would still feel meaningful.
After finishing their drinks, before you and Nayeon parted ways...
"By the way Nayeon, I have something in mind and I have to be completely honest to you" you said as you stopped walking.
"Sure, what is it?" Nayeon said as she shows her smile, "Nayeon...... I think..."

You decided to take the long way back to your dorm. You wandered through the quiet parts of campus, your thoughts drifting like the autumn leaves falling around you. There was a stillness in the air that seemed to mirror her internal state-a quiet waiting, a pause before something inevitable.
