The next few days passed in a blur for you. The intimate night with Hanni lingered in your thoughts, replaying like a favorite song you couldn't get out of your head. Every time you recalled her smile, the warmth of her hand in yours, or the way her words hinted at things unspoken, you felt an ache you couldn't quite name. You wanted to talk to her, to see if she felt the same, but every time you saw her, Hanni seemed... different.
Hanni had started pulling away. At first, you brushed it off, assuming she was busy with her own things. But as the days went on, her absence grew more noticeable, her messages grew shorter, and her presence felt more distant. She wasn't avoiding you completely, but gone were the lingering looks and shared secrets. You tried to brush it off, thinking maybe it was just school stress, but a gnawing worry crept in, telling you something else was going on.
After class, you were determined to talk to her, to understand what was happening between you. You hurried to catch up with her as she made her way down the hallway. "Phammy! Wait up," you called, reaching for her arm.
She turned, a forced smile on her face. "Oh, hey," she said, but there was a guardedness in her tone.
"What's going on with you?" you asked, trying to keep your voice light. "You've been... distant lately. Did I do something wrong?"
Hanni's laugh was hollow. "No, it's not you. I've just... got a lot going on."
You stepped closer, your gaze steady. "We used to talk about everything. If something's wrong, you know you can tell me, right?"
There was a hesitation in her eyes, a moment where it seemed like she might open up. But then she shrugged, her expression closing off. "Maybe I just need some space," she said, her tone cool and controlled.
"Space?" you echoed, a pang of hurt creeping into your voice. "After everything we... shared?"
Hanni's eyes softened briefly, but then she seemed to steel herself, her voice firm. "Maybe some distance is what we need."
Before you could respond, she turned and walked away, leaving you standing alone in the crowded hallway, feeling the weight of her words settle over you.
What had gone wrong?
--------------------------------------
For the rest of the week, you tried to respect Hanni's wish for space, but it wasn't easy. You missed her jokes, her warmth, and the feeling that she was always just a heartbeat away. Without her, the days felt colorless, and you found yourself lost in thoughts of what might have happened to make her act this way.
It was Nayeon who eventually noticed your distracted mood. "You've seemed off lately," she said one afternoon as you sat on the campus lawn. "Anything I can help with?"
You forced a small smile. "Just... stuff with Hanni. It's complicated."
She nodded, sympathetic. "She's important to you, isn't she?"
"Yeah," you admitted quietly, the ache rising in your chest again. "She really is."
Nayeon placed a reassuring hand on your shoulder. "Sometimes people need space to figure things out. Maybe she's just going through something."
You appreciated her kindness, but deep down, you couldn't shake the feeling that this was more than just Hanni needing time alone. You knew her too well to believe that. This felt like she was scared of something, and that it had to do with you.
That night, unable to keep the thoughts from racing, you finally reached out, sending her a text: "I miss you, Hanni. Please tell me what's going on."
