The Breaking Point

The following days after the gala were a blur, each one feeling like a delicate dance where you and Hanni circled each other, careful not to step too close. Hanni was friendly, but there was a hesitation in her gaze, a quietness that felt like a barrier.

As much as you tried to keep things light and normal, it felt forced. The warmth and ease that had once defined your friendship had shifted into something tense and uncertain. And while you'd promised to give her space, the silence was starting to chip away at you.

One evening, you were studying late at the library. It was so late that you can feel the pain on your lower back from sitting too much. You decided to take a short break, you put down your ball pen, stood up from your chair, and exited the library.

You find yourself sitting on a isolated bench at the back of the school's building, it was quiet not that dark. It has light coming from the tall building of the campus and it's light post. Your mind began to cause trouble again.

HERE WE GO , you said in your mind

Before your thoughts begins to consume you, you directly shrug it off and proceed to go back to the library to finish your remaining lessons to study and practice problems to answer.

As you were finishing up a study session in the campus library, you noticed a small note half covered. You peeled the sticky note from the notebook and read

Are you free to talk? I'm at the old amphitheater.

Base from the handwriting itself you directly know who wrote it. It's Hanni.

The note caught you off guard. The amphitheater was a secluded spot on campus, a quiet place that had been your refuge during late-night study breaks or deep talks. The fact that she chose that place meant she had something important to say. Your heart raced as you gathered your things and headed over, hoping that this time, you'd finally get the clarity you both needed.

When you arrived, Hanni was already there, sitting on the low stone wall with her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She looked up as you approached, and in the dim light, you could see the unease etched across her face.

"Hey," she greeted softly, giving you a small, hesitant smile.

"Hey," you replied, sitting beside her. The silence between you was heavy, but this time, it felt loaded with anticipation rather than tension.

You glanced at her without Hanni noticing.

Hanni looked down, fidgeting with her hands. "Thanks for coming."

"Of course," you said, trying to read her expression. "What's going on, Hanni?"

She took a deep breath, her eyes fixed on her hands as she seemed to gather her thoughts. "I know things have been... weird between us lately," she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "And I know that's mostly my fault."

You stayed quiet nodding every word she said, sensing she needed to say this in her own way.

"I guess... I've been avoiding things," she admitted, her voice shaky. "Ever since the gala, I keep thinking about that night. And the way I acted... leaving like that, disappearing without an explanation—it wasn't fair to you. Or to myself, really."

Her words hung in the air, each one tugging at the unresolved feelings you'd been carrying around.

You break the silent battle you had, "What are you avoiding, Hanni?" you asked gently, not wanting to push too hard but needing to understand.
