The narrow passage was cold, silent, and ominously dark as they ventured further in. Ollie's nervous whisper broke the quiet. "I could... um, cast another spell to lighten things up?" He held up his wand, already sparking with glitter.
"Just a quick one," Babe agreed, grinning at Ollie's eager nod.
Ollie murmured an incantation, and soft, glowing hearts floated around them. Unfortunately, they were not only sparkly but also unhelpfully opinionated. Each glitter heart floated around with phrases like "Kiss him, you fool!" in sparkly letters. Babe read one out loud, laughing. Billy, eyeing the hearts with a dignified sigh, muttered, "Is this really appropriate for an infiltration?"
Babe shrugged with a smirk. "Hey, the glitter hearts have spoken, Billy."
As they moved, enchanted cobwebs draped across the walls with dramatic flair, rearranging themselves with each step. The webs glistened like theater curtains as they adjusted for "optimal atmosphere," and Babe couldn't resist a snarky comment. "10/10 for atmosphere, 2/10 for subtlety," he said.
The webs, apparently self-conscious, adjusted again, casting an even spookier shadow.
Deeper in, an eerie whisper floated through the air. Darius's voice reverberated along the passage, clearly aiming for something intimidating. "Fear the darkness..." it began in a deep, menacing tone, then somehow faltered, adding, "...and don't forget to like and subscribe!"
Babe raised an eyebrow. "Even ancient evil has to keep up with social media."
They pressed on, trying to ignore the odd mix of horror and hilarity, when a shadow resembling a vampire bunny began following them along the wall. It struck dramatic poses, even throwing in a few TikTok dance moves that had Ollie stifling laughter.
"Is it... doing TikTok dances?" Ollie whispered, watching as the shadow attempted a half-hearted floss.
Billy, visibly fighting to keep his composure, only nodded, leading the group deeper into the passage.
As they rounded a corner, Draven suddenly appeared out of nowhere, his cape billowing theatrically behind him. "Ah, there you all are," he said with his usual smugness. "Scouting ahead," he added with an air of forced casualness.
Babe rolled his eyes, muttering, "Nice of you to drop by uninvited... again."
The enchanted estate seemed to share Babe's sentiment. Cobwebs drifted over Draven's hair, sticking annoyingly, while glitter hearts spelled out "Team Babe + Billy" above him. Draven, unfazed, brushed the cobwebs away, looking disgruntled as he tried to maintain his dignity.
His every step landed on squeaky floorboards, despite the stone floor, as if the house had gone out of its way to create a sound effect for him alone. A vampire bunny shadow darted in front of Draven, photobombing him as he tried to strike up a serious conversation with Billy.
Finally, they reached a large set of double doors. The passage opened into a dimly lit grand chamber, shadows flickering along the walls. They hadn't been there long when Darius's voice boomed through the chamber, clearly intended to be terrifying. However, the chamber's lights kept adjusting as if trying to find his "good angle."
Babe could barely contain a snicker. "Is this your preferred threatening ambiance?" he asked, watching as the lights flickered, illuminating Darius with an accidental golden halo that looked less ominous and more like a Renaissance portrait.
Darius, visibly annoyed, muttered, "Stop that immediately," but the chamber ignored him, adding a backlight effect that seemed to frame Billy in a heroic glow instead. The chamber even creaked, like it was chuckling at Darius's expense.
"Fear not," Darius began again, his voice booming. "For I am the—"
The sound of soft applause filled the room as Darius's echo died off. Ollie's glitter hearts drifted above his head, forming a sparkling halo that was anything but menacing, and the vampire bunny shadow enthusiastically mimicked his gestures, its ears flopping with every pose.
Babe, smirking, leaned toward Billy, mouthing, "He's giving very much Disney villain." Billy fought a grin, his serious demeanor nearly cracking as he watched the chaotic scene unfold.
Unbothered by his own theatrics, Darius continued, his voice dropping to a quieter, more taunting tone. "Billy," he said, a twisted smile forming. "I never expected you to surround yourself with such... distractions. It's a shame, really. All that tradition, wasted on someone who can barely hold onto his past."
Billy straightened, his face calm and resolute, but Babe could sense the irritation simmering beneath the surface. Ignoring Darius's words, Billy kept his gaze steady, a quiet defiance in his stance. Babe took a step closer, mouthing, "We've got this," with a reassuring wink.
Darius sneered, his eyes narrowing as he noticed the subtle bond between Babe and Billy. "Clinging to the modern world," he scoffed. "It's weak. Pathetic, really." He raised a hand, and a ripple of shadows spread across the floor.
Just then, the enchanted cobwebs clung defiantly to the walls, refracting light in a way that cast Babe and Billy in a spotlight. They shared a moment of silent understanding, strengthened by their unspoken resolve to face Darius together.
As Darius began another monologue, the enchanted estate upped its comedic interference. The vampire bunny started doing an interpretive dance in the background, Ollie's glitter hearts provided a constant sparkle, and every dramatic pause was punctuated by what sounded suspiciously like slow-motion applause.
Babe, not one to resist a good quip, smirked. "Sorry, could you repeat that last threat? The ambiance was a bit loud."
Billy, barely holding back a laugh, whispered, "Babe, please."
Despite the chaotic comedy, the chamber's intensity continued to rise, an ominous promise of the confrontation to come. And amid it all, Billy stood firm, his loyalty and determination evident as he focused on Babe and Ollie, unwavering in his commitment to stand against Darius.
As the tension swelled, they readied themselves for whatever Darius had planned next, the strength of their bond—and a dash of humor—keeping them grounded.
