The quiet that settled over the estate was a stark contrast to the battle that had just taken place. Shadows no longer lingered ominously, and the faint hum of Darius's dark energy was gone, leaving only the faint glow of candlelight and a gentle, welcoming stillness in the air.
Babe, Billy, and Ollie had settled onto the oversized couch in the main room, each looking a bit worn but unmistakably triumphant.
"Well," Babe began, leaning back with a sigh, "that was... intense."
Ollie nodded, his face still lit with pride. "I can't believe we actually did it. The whole shadow thing, the Darius showdown—everything."
Billy smiled softly, looking between the two of them. "It's remarkable what we've accomplished," he said, his voice calm and full of warmth. "We're all quite... resilient, it seems."
The enchanted objects in the room seemed to sense the gravity of the moment. The chandelier above dimmed its lights, casting a warm glow, while the coat rack straightened itself as if standing guard. Even the perpetually noisy enchanted suit of armor by the door gave a respectful nod.
Babe noticed and grinned. "Looks like even the furniture is in awe of our skills."
Ollie chuckled, leaning back comfortably. "I think they're just glad they don't have to deal with Darius lurking around anymore."
They lapsed into a companionable silence, each lost in their thoughts. The events of the past few days had forced them to grow, to trust each other, and to form a connection they hadn't expected. For the first time, Babe felt like he was part of something more—something real.
After a moment, he cleared his throat. "So, what now? I mean, Ollie," he paused, looking over with a teasing smile, "isn't your 'probation' supposed to end soon?"
Ollie's face grew thoughtful. "Yeah... I think so. I'm hoping the Council sees how much I've grown. I'd like to stay here if I can," he added shyly, casting a hopeful glance at Billy and Babe.
Billy gave a reassuring nod. "We'd like that too. I think you've more than proven yourself."
Babe ruffled Ollie's hair. "You're part of the team now, kid. Council or no Council."
They shared a laugh, the warmth of their bond filling the room. Babe realized how much this little family meant to him. For so long, he'd lived in the shadows of his past, blending into society, avoiding connections. But now, he was part of something that mattered.
"I've been thinking," Babe said after a pause, his tone serious but his eyes sparkling with humor. "Maybe I don't have to keep just 'blending in' anymore. Maybe... we make our own kind of normal around here. I mean, if the estate is cool with it."
As if in response, the chandelier above flickered and glowed a bit brighter, as though the estate itself was cheering them on.
Billy turned to him, his expression soft. "You're not alone anymore, Babe. None of us are. Whatever comes next, we face it together."
Babe tried to mask his feelings with a playful grin. "You getting all mushy on me, Billy?"
Billy rolled his eyes, though a hint of a smile remained. "Perhaps. But you've brought out that side of me, haven't you?"
Ollie beamed at them, clearly touched. "So... can we make it official? A team toast or something?"
Babe raised an imaginary glass, followed by Billy and Ollie, and they shared a silent toast to the future—whatever it might hold. As they settled back, content and connected, Babe couldn't help but feel that they had something truly special.
Just as the warmth of the moment settled over them, Ollie cleared his throat, "So... here's to new beginnings?"
Babe grinned, looking over at Billy and then at Ollie, a spark of anticipation in his eyes. "Here's to whatever comes next."
Unbeknownst to them, their quiet night wouldn't remain so for long. Just outside the estate, the Council's official carriage had arrived, bearing the visitor who would deliver the final answers they were seeking.
