It had been about a month since Karina and SJ met, and their connection continued to grow stronger. They had shared laughs, gone on adventures and explored their creative sides together. But one evening, things took a deeper, more personal turn. It started off as a simple night in, with them lounging in Karina's cozy studio apartment. The atmosphere was relaxed and the soft music playing in the background.
SJ could sense there was something on Karina's mind. She was quiet, her eyes wandering toward the window as she stared out into the night sky. Her usual vibrancy seemed dulled, as if something was weighing heavily on her heart. SJ didn't want to push her, but he knew her to recognize when she wasn't quite herself.
"You okay?" he asked gently, turning his attention from the artwork on her wall to her. His voice was soft, but full of concern.
Karina's lips parted, but she hesitated, as if debating whether or not she wanted to share what was on her mind. After a moment, she sighed, leaning back against the couch. "I'm fine... it's just, well, I've been thinking about something. Someone actually" she said.
SJ shifted closer, his eyes warm and attentive. "I'm here if you want to talk about it. No pressure, but... I can tell something's bothering you."
Karina let out a small laugh, though there was no humor behind it. It was more like a reflex, a way to ease her nerves. "You're perceptive, SJ. I'll give you that."
He smiled slightly, taking her hand in his. "Just trying to understand you better."
She appreciated that about him, his patience, his willingness to listen without judgment. It was something she wasn't used to. In her past, vulnerability had often been met with indifference or discomfort, but SJ was different. He was present, fully engaged, and that made her feel safe enough to open up.
"There was a guy," Karina began, her voice quiet as she stared down at their intertwined hands. "This was a long time ago, back when I was just starting out with my art. He was... someone I thought I could trust, someone I really cared about."
SJ remained silent, giving her the space she needed to share at her own pace.
Karina swallowed hard, her eyes distant as she recalled the memory. "We got really close, really fast. He was sweet, charming, and for a while, I thought he felt the same way about me. We spent a lot of time together and I started to let my guard down." She paused, her voice, tightening. "But then one day, out of nowhere... he was gone. No explanation. No goodbye. He just disappeared."
Her words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of old wounds. SJ's heart ached for her as he watched her relive the pain of that betrayal. He could see how deeply it had affected her, how it still lingered in her mind even though it happened years ago. It wasn't just the loss of a relationship, it was the way it had left her questioning her worth, her trust in others.
"I'm so sorry, Karina." SJ said softly, his thumb gently caressing the back of her hand. "That must have been incredibly painful."
Karina nodded, blinking back the emotions that threatened to surface. "Yeah, it was. I blamed myself for a long time. I thought maybe I wasn't good enough, or that I did something to push him away. It's... it's hard to get close to someone after something like that. I keep wondering if it'll happen again."
SJ leaned in closer, his gaze never leaving hers. "Karina, I can't pretend to know exactly how you feel, but I do know that it's not your fault. People leave for their own reasons, and most of the time, it has nothing to do with you. You are more than enough, and anyone who makes you feel otherwise isn't worth your time."
His words, simple but full of sincerity, touched her deeply. She looked at him, her eyes filled with a mix of gratitude and vulnerability. "I guess I've been scared of opening up to you because of that." she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't want to get hurt again."
